Tesla Model X Rises to the Top

There were 3.697 new plug-ins sold in Norway last month, up 22% YoY, with the YTD EV Share stable at 29%.

If last month the Tesla Model X stole the headlines, this time it was finally up to the rejuvenated BMW i3 to sit at the throne, with 503 units.

The Mitsu Outlander PHEV ended in Second, with 360 units, ahead of two VW plug-in hybrids, the #3 Passat GTE (338 units, best result in six months) and the #5 Golf GTE (302 sales), all while the #4 Nissan Leaf had a return to form, registering 321 units, its best result since April.

Looking at the year-to-date ranking, there is an important change in the podium, with the Nissan Leaf and VW Golf GTE changing their positions again, this time to the advantage of the Japanese hatch, recovering the Third Place.

To see more ranking changes, we have to go down in the ranking, to #15, where the BMW X5 PHEV recovered one position from its arch-rival Tesla Model X, this could be an interesting race if the American SUV-Minivan-Sports Car didn't went into Hyperdrive mode next December...Which it will.

Below these two, only the recently arrived Hyundai Ioniq Electric went noticed, having registered 66 units, its best result in Europe so far, which could indicate that the Korean manufacturer is: a) Production constrained, as it didn't expected so much demand in its home market; b) Prioritizing Norway, as this was the only market outside South Korea to receive BEV Ioniqs in significant numbers.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (30%) continues in the lead, followed from a far by Mitsubishi (13%), BMW (12%, up 1%) and Nissan (11%, down 1%).

Looking at Fuel Cell numbers, numbers are starting to pick up in their own little niche, with Toyota registering 3 Mirai and Hyundai one FCEV last month, with the latter leading the YTD count by 10 to 7.

With 29% share, the EV's performance in the general ranking is more relevant than ever, of the 858 units sold by the chronical leader VW Golf last month, only 271, or 32%, didn't had a Plug.

Splitting models by fuel source, and following on the Tesla Model X leadership in September, we have another BEV in the First Place, with the BMW i3 finally reaching for #1, and that's without the help of the Rex version, which has marginal sales in this market.

Below it, in Second, we have the ICE VW Tiguan, which by the way, is scheduled to have a plug-in hybrid version (GTE in VW language) soon, or at least that's what the German carmaker promised...If it doesn't market it soon, it will be a missed opportunity, as currently there is no plug-in car available in the compact crossover class and it would have the market all to itself.

While the Tiguan GTE doesn't arrive, the closest thing buyers have is the Third Placed Toyota RAV4, which benefits from its hybrid version to reach a podium place.

The remaining plug-ins in the Top 10 are the Mitsu Outlander PHEV, #4 with 360 units, the #7 VW Passat GTE, with its plug-in hybrid relative, the Golf GTE, in #10, all while the veteran Nissan Leaf is back to the Top Positions, ending October in #9.
