Renault Zoe 2016 Best Seller, Model X Rookie of the Year

The 320 units registered last month were the best result of the year, pulling the year tally to 1.438 units, which was still a 70% drop over last year and most importantly, less than 2014, when the market reached 1.642 units.

Same story regarding the EV Share, the 0.65% of 2016 is way behind the 2.29% of 2015 and even 2014 was better, with 0.88%...Let's hope 2017 brings better news from this market.

The top two models concentrated 61% of sales, with the Renault Zoe winning without a sweat its First Best Seller award, with 612 units and 43% share, followed by the BMW i3 (252 units, 18%), while the Third Place was won by the Tesla Model X, a model received with open arms by the Danes, allowing it to be the Rookie of the Year and earn a podium seat.

Looking at the remaining models ranking, the two times Best Seller (2013 & 2014) Nissan Leaf jumped in December to Fourth, thanks to a year best performance of 57 registrations, displacing the Tesla Model S to #5.

In the Manufacturers ranking, Renault was the Best Seller (43%) thanks to the Zoe success, with BMW ending in a distant Second (18%) and Tesla in Third (12%), with the French carmaker winning its second title, after the 2012 win.

In this BEV-heavy market, PHEV's did some groundwork and grew to 11% share in 2016, up from just 3% in 2015.

Finally a mention to Fuel Cells, there were 16 FCEV's registered in 2016, significantly below the 30 units sold in the previous year, the soon-to-be-departed Hyundai ix35 FCEV still outsold the Toyota Mirai by 12 units to 4, despite the Japanese having better specs, it seems buyers prefer the normal look of the Hyundai.

Zoe #1 in half full, half empty market

The 227 units registered last month were the second best result of the year, with the EV Share growing to a year best score of 0.55%, so in isolation it looks that the market is going forward, until you realise that the same month last year there were 648 units...And the YTD tally was counting 3.110 units. True, last year sales were inflated by fiscal changes, so it wouldn't be fair to compare different realities, but comparing 2016 sales with 2014, sales are still down 15%. Mmmm...

The top two models concentrate 64% of sales, with the Renault Zoe leading with 477 units and 43% share, followed by the BMW i3 (232 units, 21%), which registered 34 units in November, all full-electrics, while the Third Place is being disputed by the Tesla siblings, with the Model X beating its Model S older brother by 59 to 58 (A first in any YTD ranking).

Looking at the rest of the models ranking, only two other models register two digit sales, with the Nissan e-NV200 / Evalia twins jumping to #6, thanks to a year best 14 units, while the recent Mercedes GLC350e is ready to have a shot at the PHEV Best Seller trophy, now that is only five units from the class leader, the Mercedes C350e.

Denmark got a bundle of Model X's late last month

Something is Strange in the Kingdom of Denmark

With a year best result of 283 units registered last month, it was the first time this year, with the EV Share growing to  0.46%, far from the 2.29% from last year, but above the 0.29% registered in 2013 and closer to the 0.88% of 2014.

The strange thing in this recent sales surge is that 82% of sales in the last two months were concentrated in just two models, with the BMW i3 scoring 110 units in August and the Renault Zoe an even more outlandish 195 units last month. Fleet sales or is something else going on?

Looking at the rest of the models ranking, the only other model registering in decent numbers is the Tesla Model X, which had 16 deliveries last month, rising to Third in the YTD ranking, tied with its Model S older brother.

Tesla Superstar

Tesla continues to steal the show in Denmark, with the 103 units sold representing 75% of all EV's registered last month, with the Californian Star once again dominating the E-Segment/full-size market (41 units ahead of the #2 Audi A6), if in YTD sales the same Audi is still the leader, the Model S is only 12 units behind...Will we see it #1 in August?

In other news, the 138 units represent a 65% increase YoY, with the EV Share steady at 1.19%, comfortably ahead of the 0,88% of last year.

The rest of the competition took the time to have an holiday break, all of them sold in single numbers, with no significant performances or position changes.

Pedal to the Metal

The big news was that from the 265 units registered last month, 60% of them were Teslas(!), with the american car already sending shock waves in the (Small) Premium sector of the Danish Auto market, not only the 160 units were enough to make it the Best Selling car of its class (42 units ahead of the Audi A6), but in YTD sales it is only behind the same Audi, and it's not that far away, being only 54 units behind...The German Premiums must be taking notes by now...

Looking at the models ranking, the Tesla Model S made a smashing return to the leadership, changing positions with the surprisingly slow selling Nissan e-NV200 / Evalia, which registered only 8 vans, all of the commercial variety.

The Nissan Leaf continues in #3, but  the BMW i3 (Only 2 BEV vs 16 Rex) and Renault Zoe took the chance to get a little bit closer, with the french car returning its best result of the year (29 units) and reaching the german  to a tie in #4.

The current Rookie Of The Year, Mercedes C350e, continues to impress, rising to #8 and surpassing the Outlander PHEV in the Best Selling PHEV competition.

Speaking of PHEV's, this is one of the strongholds of pure electric cars, with 97% of the market, but even here plug-in hybrids are starting to make a dent, if the 3% share they currently own sounds small, it is still a significant increase from the 2% of last year and 1% in 2013...

All hail the new leader

The Beauty and the Beast III

211 units were registered last month, the second best result of the year, with the EV Share stable at 1.24%.

Looking at the models ranking, there was a leadership change, the Tesla Model S was down to #2, changing positions with the surprising Nissan e-NV200 / Evalia, news leaders in the YTD ranking by just one unit(!) (344 vs 343 units), this is the first time that the japanese twins reach the #1 spot anywhere in the world, will they remain in the leadership next month?

June is usually a strong month for Tesla, so i doubt it, but you never know...

The Nissan Leaf continues in #3, but sales were only 2 units last month (Feeling the heat from the Evalia?), and the BMW i3 and Renault Zoe took the chance to get a little bit closer.

Finally, the VW e-Golf returned to #6, surpassing the e-Up! relative, while the Mercedes C350e has landed with a bang, establishing itself right away like a serious candidate for the PHEV Best Seller of the Year.

Another market warmingly receiving the e-NV200 / Evalia duo

The Beauty and the Beast II Edition

After a record 483 units registered in March, the Danish market is back at more normal numbers (184 sales) but the EV Share is still above the 1% barrier, now at 1.24%.

Looking at the models ranking, the two major players are the Tesla Model S sport-sedan, leader in the YTD ranking (272 units), and the runner-ups Nissan e-NV200 / Evalia vans, Best Sellers in April (66 units) and now seriously threatening Tesla's YTD leadership, both are separated by only six units...

The Nissan Leaf continues in #3, followed at a distance by the BMW i3 and Renault Zoe.

Finally, the VW e-Up! climbed to #6, surpassing its larger brother e-Golf, and the Mercedes B-Class ED registered 3 units, enabling it to leave the bottom position to the BMW i8 and Renault Kangoo ZE

Sprintime Records - The Beauty and the Beast Edition

After two slow selling months, the local EV market sold a record 483 units last month, almost three times of what it did in the same month of last year, with the EV Share passing for the first time the 1%, now at 1.39.

Looking at the models ranking, we can see the two main culprits for this outstanding performance, the Monthly Best Seller was the Tesla Model S sport-sedan-sexy-thingy, which shattered the previous monthly record for a single model (115 units last December, also by the Model S), by selling an amazing 180 units.

But this performance was almost outrun by Nissan's rising star, the Nissan e-NV200 workhorse sold a mesmerizing 172 units, with most of them (139, to be exact) being passenger  versions! (Aka Evalia).

The Nissan Leaf also had a memorable performance, selling 73 units, its best result of the year, propelling it to #3, up four positions, making a 1-3 podium for Nissan, leading the manufacturers ranking (44%), ahead of Tesla (34%) and BMW (7%).

A final remark for the LCV sector, besides the stratospheric performance of the e-NV200, the Renault Kangoo ZE was now outrunned (4 vs 2 units) by the Citroen Berlingo EV!

Renault really needs to do something about it...

The e-NV200 dash loses some style in favor of practicality

e-NV200 Superstar Edition

The local EV market sold 85 units last month, almost double of what it did the same month of 2014, with the YTD numbers at 156 units (and aprox. 0,53% EV Share), it's a promising start, considering that this is one of those markets with slow beginnings and strong endings.

Looking at the models ranking, February saw a new car reach the Monthly Best Seller title, with the Nissan e-NV200 reaching #1 for the first time, a first for a LCV-derived vehicle, which makes you wonder if companies and fleet managers are finally looking at electric vehicles with a more serious look.

This brilliant result took the japanese van straight to #2 in the YTD chart, only behind the Tesla Model S,  with the BMW i3 ending the month at #3 YTD, while the Renault Zoe made a disappointing result, only registering 5 units and falling to #4.

But the tumble of the year has got to go to the Nissan Leaf, after a Best Seller title in 2014, this year things are much more complicated for the electric hatch, it is only #7, with 7 registrations YTD, when at the same time last year it had 80...

A mention for the PHEV Best Seller, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV registered 6 units, a new monthly record for plug-in hybrids, with their share now at a spectacular 5% of the EV market, five times more than they had a year ago...

Speaking of minorities, this February it was registered one Hyundai ix35 FCEV, representing 0,00003% of the total market.
