Renault Zoe - 1 / BMW i3 - 1

The Swiss EV market registered some 400 units last month, up 19% YoY, with the EV Share now at 2.2%.

In the race for the 2017 Best Seller title, if the BMW i3 started the year in the lead, in February it was time for the Renault Zoe to shine, with 83 units, a new record for the French hatchback, no doubt thanks to the massive delivery of the ZE 40 version, allowing it to overcome the German Hot Hatch in the YTD ranking.

The Tesla players remained in their places, with the Model X (30 units) once again outrunning its Model S (19) sibling, the fourth time it happened in the last six months, meaning that the Swiss audience is preferring the SUV over its lower-riding sibling.

In the manufacturers ranking, BMW (27%, down 7%) stayed in the First position, now followed by Renault (17%, up 4%), which displaced Tesla (16%, down 3%) to Third.

Switzerland December 2016

Image result for 2016 Tesla Model S and X

Tesla Territory

The Swiss EV market registered over 700 units last month, a year best, with sales up 23% YoY, but this last push wasn't enough to put the 2016 numbers in the black, as sales were down 6% and the EV Share ended at 1.89%, below the 1.98% of last year.

In November the BMW i3 had horrid month, registering only 19 units, but December more than made up for it, as 149 units were delivered (Year best), it seems BMW starved the Swiss in November, compensating in the following month, thus becoming the Best Selling model last month and beating both Tesla Models.

Speaking of Tesla, if the i3 was last month Best Seller, the Model S was the 2016 Best Selling model, winning this trophy for the Third time in a row, with 1.299 units, below the 1.556 of last year, but if we add the Model X (#5, with 402 units), the Palo Alto company actually grew 9%.

Looking elsewhere, December took the BMW i3 to Second Place, with 547 units, while the Tesla Model X ended the year in Fifth Place, a positive position for a model that only arrived in the second half of the year, and enough to grab the Rookie of the Year and Best Selling SUV titles.

In the manufacturers ranking, after winning the title in 2009 and 2015, Tesla won its Third Manufacturers tile, with 28% share, followed by BMW (17%), and Volkswagen (11%).

Regarding the BEV/PHEV breakdown, plug-in hybrids managed to recover ground to pure electrics, having now 39% share, versus 36% in 2015.

1-2 For Tesla

The Swiss EV market registered some 400 units last month, down 38% YoY, with YTD numbers down 13% and the EV Share down to 1.8%, closer from the 1.98% of last year.

The main culprit for this drop in November was the BMW i3, which registered only 19 units, miles behind the 227 units sold in November 2015. Despite being a hot item, it seems BMW prioritized other markets (Like Norway...), starving Switzerland of its Stormtrooper hot hatch in November. Will we see it having a record month in December?

Tesla did its part, with the newer Model X (54 units) beating its Model S (41), and both securing the top positions in November.

Looking elsewhere, there are no significant changes in the first half of the ranking, with the only real outsider regarding last year being the Tesla Model X, in Sixth.

However, on the second half of the ranking, the Audi Q7 e-Tron and Hyundai Ioniq Electric are replicating here the warm welcome received elsewhere, promising good results in 2017.

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla is First, with 29% share, down 1%, followed by Volkswagen (12%), Audi (11%) and BMW (11%).

Switzerland September 2016

Switzerland September 2016

1-2 For Tesla

The Swiss EV market registered some 680 units last month, up 26% YoY, the best result of the year, and although still in the red, the YTD numbers recovered, now down just 8%, with the EV Share recovering to 1.86%, closer from the 1.98% of last year.

The main culprit for this recovery was Tesla, which had a record month, delivering 315 units, almost half of the EV market last month, divided by 154 Model S and 161 Model X, which surged to the leadership in September, in its first real deliveries month.

With the newer Model X profiting from a long waiting list, it won't be difficult to see the American SUV win more Monthly trophies in the coming months, and reach the Second Place in the YTD ranking, which would be a first for Tesla, Gold and Silver in the same market.

But back at the Model S, despite YTD sales down 6% YoY, it is still enough to hold on to the Second position in its size class, staying ahead of the Audi A6 (1.080 units) and the Mercedes E-Class (927), with the leader BMW 5-Series (1.246 units) at a comfortable distance from the American Sports Sedan Liftback.

Looking elsewhere, two good results stand out, with the BMW i3 registering 69 units (Year best) and the veteran Citroen C-Zero selling 12 units, its best result in four years(!), now imagine if they offered the little quirky car with a competitive price...

Reversely, the Nissan Leaf sales seem to have dried up, with only 9 sales in the last three months, it is its worst quarter in over four years, Nissan needs to refresh its line up (40 kWh version?) urgently, if it wants to keep up with the competition.

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla reinforced its leadership, with 30% share, up 3%, followed by Volkswagen (12%), Audi (11%) and Renault (10%), all on the lookout for a podium seat.

Switzerland June 2015

Switzerland June 2015

Record Tesla Edition

The Swiss EV Market registered a fourth consecutive sales record (!), this time with 544 units, and with the EV Share rising again to 1,42%, one might consider this market to be on fire, doubling last year share (0,75%) and being already the Sixth highest EV Share market in the world.

If the BMW i3 amazed everyone in May, with a record 194 sales, it was time for Tesla to respond in June, with the american carmaker sales going through the roof, with a record 253 units, representing almost half of the total EV market and recovering the monthly sales record for a single model that BMW had stolen in the previous month.

Not only that, but this brilliant result allowed the Model S to be #36 in June's general ranking and score its first #1 in the large sedans class, ahead of the Audi A6, Merc E-Class and BMW 5-Series.

The BMW i3 sold 99 units, its best result ever if we exclude May's outlandish result, but this brilliant result was dwarfed by the stellar result of the Model S.

The rest of the competition had average months, with the exception of the Renault Zoe, selling 43 units, its best result this year, cementing its Bronze medal.

Looking at the BEV/PHEV share, plug-in hybrids currently account for 25% of sales, close to the 29% record held in 2012 and 2014, with the success of Tesla is stopping the PHEV rise that we have been witnessing in other markets.

In the manufacturers ranking, there was another leadership change, with Tesla recovering the Best Selling Throne, with 28%, dropping BMW to Second (22%), while Renault (14%) hangs on to Third, despite VW (13%) staying dangerously close.
