The French hatch quietly takes over Italy

Renault Zoe Starts in the Lead

Last month the Italian EV market surged 111% YoY, to 388 units, its best result in almost two years, with the EV share jumping to 0,23%.

While growth is always good, especially in a stagnant market like this one, most of it comes from PHEVs, which are growing 200%, becoming for the first time the majority of sales.

Looking at the models ranking, the first leader of the year was the Renault Zoe, now benefiting from the ZE40 kick, with 64 registrations, followed by another small BEV with a battery upgrade, the BMW i3, and Third we have the veteran Citröen C-Zero, with a surprising 47 registrations, no doubt connected to a fleet deal (Car Sharing?).

Below in the ranking, the #4 Mercedes GLC350e was the best selling plug-in hybrid, with 46 units, a great start for the Mercedes SUV, which goes in line with the current trends in Europe.

A mention to the Tesla Model X, delivering a record 11 units, outrunning its Model S sibling for the first time.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, BMW is in the lead, with 27% Share, followed by Renault (15%), and Mercedes (11%). It seems the Three Pointed Star is finally going all in, will we see it run for the leadership?

Italians made a warm welcome at BMW's Plug-in MPV

Nissan Leaf 2016 Best Seller, BMW #1 Manufacturer

Last month the Italian EV market registered 277 units, up 30% YoY, pulling the final 2016 sales further into black, ending with a record 3.145 units, with the EV share ending at record levels (0.17%), the third consecutive year of growth since the 0.11% of 2013. Yes, the Italian EV share is growing a snails pace, but at least it's growing...

There were two surprising performances in December, with the Renault Zoe scoring 70 units, its best month in almost two years, possibly due to deep discounts of the R240 and first deliveries of the 40 kWh version, while the Nissan Leaf pulled out 66 new registrations, its best result since March, no doubt thanks to heavy discounting.

Looking at the 2016 ranking, the Nissan Leaf won another Best Seller title in Italy, with 460 units, its best result in Italy, while the Second Placed BMW 225xe Act. Tourer was the big surprise of the year, shooting for the runner-up position with 308 units, right in its first year in the market, while also winning the Best Selling PHEV trophy.

Below in the ranking, the #4 Tesla Model S doubled last year result and became a force to be reckoned in this market, ending ahead of two podium bearers in 2015.

In the manufacturers ranking, BMW won for the first time the Manufacturers title in Italy, with 26% share, followed by Nissan (17%), and Renault (16%), effectively ending the Renault domination here, as the French carmaker had collected every Manufacturer Title since 2012.

Previously, only Citröen (2011) and Smart (2010) had won Manufacturer trophies.

The Euro-PHEV tide has also arrived to Italy, with the rise of BMW, plug-in hybrids doubled share regarding last year, PHEV's now have 41% share, a new all-time high, against just 21% in 2015...

BMW Best Selling Manufacturer

Last month the Italian EV market was up 27% YoY, to 206 units, placing YTD sales further to black, now up 9% YoY, with the EV share at 0,15%.

Looking at the models ranking, the surprise of the Month were the 39 registrations of the Renault Zoe, its best result in 18 months, allowing it to climb to #8 in the YTD ranking, which is still far from last year performance, when in October it was #2 with 266 units...Maybe the upcoming 40 kWh version will spike sales up.

As for the YTD leader, the Nissan Leaf, Second in October with 24 units, can start thinking on the celebrations for the Best Seller title, its third in a row, as it has a 100 unit lead over the Second Placed BMW 225xe Act. Tourer.

Below in the ranking, the Volvo V60 Plug-in lost two places, dropping to #12, to the benefit of the Mercedes B250 and BMW i3, now #10 and #11, respectively.

Final mention to the good start of the Tesla Model X, delivering 8 units in its second month in the market and climbing to #20.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, BMW is in the lead, with 29% Share (Down 2%), followed by Nissan (17%), and Renault (15%, up 2%). It seems BMW will end this year the Renault domination, as the French carmaker had collected every Manufacturer Title since 2012.

The Euro-PHEV tide also arrived to Italy, with the rise of BMW, plug-in hybrids doubled share regarding last year, PHEV's now have 42% share, against just 21% in 2015...

The Model S is rising in the Italian EV Market

Tesla Model S Rises to #4

The Italian EV market had a positive September with up 56% to 235 units, placing YTD sales back to black, up 6% YoY.

Looking at the models ranking, if the Best Seller of the Month was the Nissan Leaf, thus cementing its leadership, the real news is the slow but certain climb of the Tesla Model S (28 units last month, personal best), now Fourth in the ranking, the highest place ever for the Freemont car, that has 173 units registered this year, close to the 194 delivered in the previous years...Combined.

Below in the ranking, the highlight goes for the BMW i3, up to #12, thanks to a year best 23 units, but it is still far from the Third spot earned last year.

Final mention to the good start of the Tesla Model X, delivering 7 units in its first month in the market.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, BMW is in the lead, with 31% Share (Down 1%), followed by Nissan (17%, down 2%), with Renault (13%) replacing Volkswagen (11%) in the Third Spot.

Leaf back at Number One

Another month in the 200-something units in the Italian EV Market, with 1.469 sales registered half along the year, it's safe to say that 2012 record (2.348 units) will finally be beaten. The EV Share continues at 0,16%, a low number compared with other markets, but it's the best that this EV market has ever seen.

The Nissan Leaf recovered the YTD leadership, but with the R240 version coming soon, expect the Renault Zoe to respond next month and possibly remove (again) the japanese car from the leadership.

In other news, the Mercedes B-Class ED sold 50 units, earning it a surprising Monthly Leadership, a first for Mercedes anywhere in the world, allowing it to jump eight positions to #9, while the Tesla Model S had its best month ever in Italy, registering 22 units, rising three positions to #10.

The Golf GTE surpassed the Outlander PHEV, it's now #6 and the PHEV Best-Seller, and in a couple months the sporty german will probably reach a Top 5 position, something that is telling of the rising influence of plug-in hybrids here, if we look back at 2012, pure electrics represented 97% of the market, last year PHEV's reached 9% share and now that number has doubled to 18%.

Looking at the brands ranking, Renault continues in the lead, with 28% (3% less than in May), with Nissan in Second (18%) and BMW in Third, with the german carmaker registering 14% Share.

Golf GTE Makes a Splash

Some 250 units were sold in the Italian EV Market, ending May with 1.261 sales YTD, it seems that the market will finally beat the 2012 record (2.348 units). The EV Share is at 0,16%, a few steps above last years number (0,12%).

The big news was the thundering arrival of the VW Golf GTE, the 64 units registered right now, making it not only make the most serious candidate for this year Plug-In Hybrid Best Seller title (Sorry Outlander PHEV), but it can be also the first PHEV to reach a podium seat!

In other news...The Renault Zoe recovered the #1, with 50 sales last month (Best performance in two years) while the new #3 is now belonging to the Renault Twizy, a summer favorite in Italy.

Looking at the brands ranking, Renault continues in the lead, with 31%, with Nissan in Second (17%) and BMW in Third, with the german carmaker registering 14% Share, a great improvement over the 4% achieved last year.

Springtime Records - Italian Edition

The Italian EV Market ended March with a record 436 units sold and 847 YTD, with the EV Share scaling up to 0,20%, it seems that this market has started to gain traction and that the 2012 record (2.348 units) will finally be beaten.

The Top 5 had several changes regarding last month, with last year Best Seller Nissan Leaf (147 units, best result ever) jumping from Fifth to First, the Renault Zoe dropping one position to #2, while the new #3 is a surprise, with the Citröen C-Zero delivering 100 units! (Fleet deal?)

The BMW i3 also impresses, registering 71 units, its best result to date, but it remained in #4 YTD.
