Toyota teases new Prius model

The picture on top is the tease.
The bottom one is the regular 2016 Prius.

Some say this is just the Plug-In version. But I don't think Toyota would redesign the whole rear of the car for just the Plug-in version.
Even brand new lights.

Others suggest it might be the new Prius V.
That could be. Although Toyota has hinted recently that the new Rav4 Hybrid might actually replace the Prius V in their line up.

Could it be a sporty coupe? A sedan?

Hyundai Ioniq Vs,Toyota Prius

 It's that time again. Every time I see new pictures of the Ioniq, I feel like comparing it to the new Prius.

Like I mentioned before, I never disliked the previous generation Prius.
It's not something I would get for myself, but a few friends of mine have one, and it is OK.
(Even though many car nerds love to hate it.)

But this one is horrible. It is trying way too hard.
It is basically a visual mess, inside and out. And there is no excuse for it.

I mean look at both cars above. One seems confident, the other one is like crazy kid on speed.

 And it's even worse in the back!

 A tale of two shifters.
 One that looks classy and even quite upscale.
The other one, trying to re-invent the wheel. Ending up looking like a gadget sticking out of a Japanese toilet.

 Nothing to compare here. Since the new Prius doesn't even offer a sunroof anymore...

Trunk space seems pretty similar. At least on these pictures.
The Prius might have a small advantage here actually. (Its floor seems a bit lower)

Now, Kia just announced their "50MPG Niro Crossover".
Which is larger and heavier than the Ionic. Yet uses the same power train.
So the Hyundai might even end up being more fuel efficient that the new Prius!

I really think Toyota messed up. And might end up paying the price by seeing former customers switching to other brands.

Plus, this is 2016. There is no excuse for any car to look like that...

These are pictures of a Japanese version of the all new 2016 Toyota Prius.
So I am not sure if this particular color is available in the US or not.

Still... Just look at this mess.

I have to say, I am not anti Prius. At all. I actually liked the design of the previous version.
(And I like colors. It's actually sad to see our streets filled with grey/black/white cars.)
I also have many friends who drive them, and, good for them, are very happy.
( I must say that all these people have one thing in common: they all hate driving)

The problem is how ugly the new one is. And it always surprises me when I see new pix.
Above all, that horrible color does nothing to help. It's almost a joke at this point.
A really bad joke from hell.

As I mentioned before, I actually sat in it. And it is even worse in person. Since the plastics are all pretty hard and cheap.
(For a car that isn't that cheap)

There are no excuses, in 2016, for a main stream car design to look like this.

2017 Hyundai IONIQ VS Prius. Another cheap shot

I mean really...

2017 Hyundai IONIQ already looks 1000 times better than the new Prius.

I mean really, just look at it.

I mean I am usually not that "anti Prius". I just hate ugly things.

Toyota is always trying way too hard. They are so afraid of being labeled "boring".

The Hyundai could have looked a bit more futuristic. Sure. But at least it's tasteful.

I really hope it steals sales from the Prius.

 Same thing inside. The IONIQ interior isn't futuristic, but at least, the console doesn't look like a bathtub.
With a hybrid, plug-in and pure EV versions, I predict this will do really, really well.
Low gas prices or not.
(You would have to be stupid to think gas prices will stay the way they are now. )

It just seems to be a very nice car. One that can compete with the Prius, Volt and Leaf at the same time.
