Retro NES-style Controllers: You Now Can Buy Them For Your Nintendo Switch

Ever wish your Nintendo Switch looked more like the original NES?

No? Just us? Well, either way, ColorWare thinks someone out there wants a NES-style Switch, because it has just launched the Joy Con Classic, a pair of custom-painted Switch controllers. They're painted in black and grey to resemble the original NES, but they're only available for a limited time. And, yes, they function just like any other Switch controllers and work with your existing Switch system.

ColorWare has been releasing custom versions of the Switch for several months, giving consumers the chance to literally switch up the look of their Switch. The company's new Joy Con Classic features a two-tone design in black and grey with glossy red buttons and accents, just like the Nintendo Entertainment System that originally released in 1985. But these retro controllers aren't exactly cheap. 

They come with a $200 price tag ($120 more than the standard Joy-Cons), though they feature all the same hardware - accelerometers, gyro sensors, buttons, and even matching wrist straps. So you're probably only going to pick these up if you're diehard Nintendo fan. Keep in mind shipping for the controllers is currently starting at three weeks from the time of checkout.

High-End Graphics Cards Are Now Difficult To Acquire Because Of Cryptocurrency

For a brief moment earlier this week, PC gamers looking to upgrade their rigs with the latest video cards from AMD or Nvidia felt some hope. The bitcoin-like cryptocurrency Ethereum that is driving up demand for many of those GPUs saw a drastic drop in value down to $235 from a recent high of $397. And some consumers thought that was potentially the beginning of the end for the GPU drought of 2017, but it wasn’t to be. Ethereum has recovered, and that means you are still competing with “miners” for the limited stock of Radeon RX 580s, GeForce GTX 1080s, and more.

Ethereum is trading well over $310 at the time of this posting, according to tracking site Coindesk. And that means a graphics card like the RX 580 (which starts at $250) is affordable enough for cryptocurrency miners to still earn a profit after factoring in energy costs. Ethereum is a digital coin that enables people to purchase access to distributed computing power. You can lend your PC’s power to that network to help solve those contracts in exchange for Ethereum — this is called “mining.” The price of Ethereum almost hit $400 on June 14, but miners were flooding the market in search of cost-efficient cards well before that point. The high price just meant that nearly every new GPU from both Nvidia and AMD was economically viable. 


This has, of course, left gamers frustrated. You can go on eBay now to get an RX 580 card from a third-party seller for $450, but you will struggle to find one on Amazon or Newegg at its suggested price.

AMD revealed earlier this month that cryptocurrency mining was leading to a rush on its products. And it isn’t slowing down. Even a permanent drop down to $235 for Ethereum would potentially only price out certain cards and make them easier to find.

The real solution to this problem is maybe already in the works. Nvidia and AMD know that they are benefitting from miners, and rumors claim that both companies are considering launching dedicated mining versions of some of their cards. The idea is that AMD and Nvidia would tune the cards to run 24/7, which is how mining operations work. But whether that will free up supply on other GPUs for your typical gamer building their first rig will depend on a number of factors, and you can bet that if a popular card like the GeForce GTX 1070 can make more money than a 1060 Miners Edition (or whatever Nvidia would call it), then the 1070 would sell it quickly.

Oculus Gets New Support For Native Mixed Reality Capture

When trying to sell someone on the wonder that is virtual reality, it’s better to show than to tell. Explaining the incredible immersion that a solid virtual reality experience provides is difficult to put into words, but showing someone playing or allowing a person to play themselves is the quickest path to amazement.

Mixed reality is a way to give spectators a window into virtual experiences, showing how the player inhabits a virtual world. MR is becoming a crucial element for those wanting to share their adventures in VR. Recently Oculus announced via their blog that they’ve added native MR support to their flagship PC VR headset, the Oculus Rift.




Though the new integrated support is only available for specific Rift applications MR gives content creators, advertisers, and more a chance to share VR in-person or online. There are a couple things the Oculus team recommends you keep in mind if you want to take advantage:

• You’ll need a way to mount the Touch controller for dynamic camera tracking. They’ve provided a CAD model for just this purpose and you can see the guide here,
• For best possible setup, try to follow documentation as precisely as possible, and pay special attention to the directions regarding Oculus sensor setup, USB ports, and chipsets.

If you have the time and space to produce such a setup, it behooves you to get it together and add another layer to the VR experience for your patrons, viewers, or whomever else it is that you intend to serve. Oculus is fairly receptive to feedback as well, so it could serve you to get a foot in the door early and help to shape this new feature.

Mixed reality support is still in its early stages and can be a bit difficult to setup, which is why Oculus has published an MR capture setup guide for all those interested. There are also additional guides for those wanting to integrate mixed reality support into Unity, Unreal, and native. 

How To Best Connect The Controllers Of Nintendo Switch Joy-Con/Pro To Your PC

The Joy-Con and Pro Controllers for the Nintendo Switch work just like modern Xbox One and PlayStation 4 controllers. They support Bluetooth, so you can pair them with your PC without any special hardware.

There’s one catch here: The two Joy-Cons are seen as separate controllers by your PC. You can use them as separate controllers, but you can’t combine them and use them as a full controller at the moment. 

Connecting the Controller to Your PC

First, ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your PC and open the Bluetooth interface. On Windows 10, head to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth. On Windows 7, head to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Add a device.

Next, get your controller. If you’re using Joy-Con controller, disconnect them from the Switch or the Joy-Con grip first. Long-press the “Sync” button, which you’ll find located between the SL and SR buttons on the Joy-Con. The lights next to the Sync button will begin to blink.

If you’re using a Pro Controller, you’ll find the “Sync” button at the top of the controller, to the left of the USB-C charging plug. Long-press it.

The controller will be in pairing mode after you long-press the Sync button. You’ll see the Joy-Con or Pro Controller appear in your computer’s Bluetooth menu. Select it in the menu to connect it to your PC.

Oddly enough, the lights on a Joy-Con will continue to blink even after it’s connected to your PC. However, you can clearly see that a Joy-Con is connected to your PC from the Bluetooth window, as it’s displayed in the list of connected devices.

Repeat this process if you want to pair more than one controller—for example, if you want to pair both Joy-Cons. You’ll see each controller appear in the Add a device screen when you long-press its Sync button.

This trick also works on Macs and Android devices. Just open the Bluetooth interface and long-press the Sync button on the controller to pair it like any other device.

Configuring Your Controller

You’ll be stuck using the Joy Con controllers as separate small controllers, just as you use them in two-player mode in various games on the Nintendo Switch. An enterprising geek may one day make a program that can combine them and allow you to use them as a single controller, but sadly, right now we’re stuck waiting.

The Pro Controller will work better in many PC games and emulators, as it has all the standard buttons a typical full controller would have, including two analog sticks and an D-pad.

Whichever type of controller you use, you can configure it to function in many games or emulators. Go into the program’s input menu and configure the controller however you like.

Whether you use a Joy-Con or Pro Controller, one problem you’ll find is that the controller uses the older DirectInput method instead of the newer Xinput input method, which is used by Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers. Many modern games only support Xinput, while others may just have better support for Xinput than DirectInput. That’s why Xbox controllers are the most widely supported option for PC gaming.

You can fix this by using a program like x360ce, which you can set up to convert input presses on your Switch controller to Xinput button events. This effectively allows you to emulate an Xbox 360 controller, giving your Nintendo Switch Controllers the ability to function in games that only support Xbox controllers. You have to do something similar when setting up a PlayStation 4 DualShock controller for maximum compatibility with PC games.

Pairing Your Controller With Your Switch

When you’re done, you can easily pair your Joy-Con controllers with your Nintendo Switch once again. Just physically connect the Joy-Cons to the sides of your Switch. They’ll automatically pair with your Nintendo Switch.

If this doesn’t work for some reason—or if you want to pair your Pro Controller with the Switch console once again—you can use the Switch’s normal controller-pairing process. Select Controllers > Pair New Controllers on your Switch’s home screen to get started. Follow the instructions on your screen. You’ll be prompted to press the Sync button on your controller to continue.

When you want to use your controllers with your PC again, you’ll have to return to the Bluetooth menu and pair them using the Sync button once again. But, once you know where to look, the pairing process is fast.

Mass Effect: You Can Have Andromeda For $20 Now In The US

Looking for something new to play? BioWare's Mass Effect: Andromeda is currently marked down to just $20 at US retailer GameStop. This price is for physical editions for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and is down from its previous price of $40.

Andromeda launched in March behind tepid review scores. The game was quickly discounted, while publisher Electronic Arts in May responded to the game's mixed reaction. Following that, a report said the Mass Effect series was put on hiatus. 


$20 is one of the lowest price we've ever seen for Andromeda, so if you've been curious but didn't want to pay full-price, now looks like a good time to think about jumping in.

Andromeda is discounted in other regions, too. In Australia, you can get the game for around $57 instead of its usual $100 price point, while UK shoppers can get a copy of the game for around £33 right now.


"In many ways, Andromeda feels like a vision half-fulfilled. It contains a dizzying amount of content, but the quality fluctuates wildly. Its worlds and combat shine, but its writing and missions falter--and the relative strength of the former is not enough to compensate for the inescapable weakness of the latter," reviewer Scott Butterworth said.

In other news, a recent report claimed that BioWare, breaking from series tradition, will not release any single-player DLC for Andromeda.

The cat is out of the bag: Motorola's new Moto Mods now have official release dates. That means there will soon be more ways to upgrade Moto Z phones, such as the Moto Z2 Play, in a snap.

To be exact, the accessories making their way are the Moto GamePad, the JBL SoundBoost 2, the Moto TurboPower Pack, and the series of Moto Style Shells with wireless charging support.

The Moto GamePad is expected to arrive sometime this summer with a $79.99 price tag.

As for what it can do, the name says it all. Just to be clear, though, it's designed to take the mobile gaming experience to the next level, offering a physical D-pad, two control sticks, and four action buttons.

Torchlight ( The Legend Continues) Has Come To Google Play Store

The Torchlight mobile game called Torchlight: The Legend Continues has landed on the Play Store two years after developer Runic Games announced the action RPG title. The developers confirmed the game during the E3 event in June 2015. As to why it was delayed for a long time until now, no explanation was given. But the more important thing now is the mobile game’s launch on Android phones in the Philippines, at least for now.

 It remains to be known when it will come to other countries. Published by Efun Company Limited, Torchlight: The Legend Continues retains the unique style of Torchlight series for which gamers have come to love the video game, though a slight variation from the original series is noticeable, probably to appeal to mobile users.

In terms of equipment systems, the developers acknowledge the fact that Torchlight bears a striking resemblance to Diablo. Torchlight: The Legend Continues features random attribute, random skills, set attribute, gem effects, and legendary equipment attribute. The game includes three classes of roles, and six main skills are associated with each class. That means you can create different combinations from 36 skills and achieve 120 types of combined skills. Users can also combine skills in a number of ways and use different types of combined skills in the game.



Like the Diablo and Torchlight series, the mobile action RPG is also developed with randomness in mind. Randomness is clearly deep-rooted in Diablo and the Torchlight series, and it seems to be ingrained in the Torchlight mobile game as well. For example, users may encounter random monsters in every stage. Players can also go fishing in random ponds. This enables players to strengthen their pets, which come with the game in two types: featured and characteristic pets. How to Change the Location On Your Nintendo Switch To Play Games Meant For Other Countries

With the Switch, Nintendo has left behind a long legacy of region-locking its consoles. Now, if you buy a console in the US, you can buy cartridges from Japan, or browse other region’s eShops for new games or cheaper prices. Here’s how to change the region on your Switch.

While the Switch isn’t region-locked, there are still some differences that might make temporarily changing regions more appealing. A game may be released in Japan before it’s released in the US, or you might find a game for a cheaper price in another region’s eShop.  




Some games might never see a release in your region. If you’re into foreign games or just want to shop around, it might be worth changing your region. If you buy cartridges from another region, you’ll need to change your console’s region to play them, too.

To change the region on your console, select Settings from the main menu.

Scroll down to the bottom and select System.

Select Region from the System menu.

Choose the region you want to switch to from the pop up that appears.

Next, you’ll need to accept a new EULA to switch regions. Click Next.

On the next screen, click the Accept checkbox. Next , select Restart. The console will reboot using the region you selected.

Once your console has restarted, you can use any cartridges from the region you chose. For example, if you bought a copy of Breath of the Wild in Japan, you can play it in your console after you change your region to Japan. If you want to shop from another region’s eShop, you can create a second account and user profile and set the location for that account to match the region. The Switch asks you which user you’re playing as every time you open a game or the eShop, so you can always pick the user that matches the region you bought a game for every time.
