Fageol bus returns to Denali

the 1924 Fageol safety coach that belonged to the Mt. McKinley Tourist and Transportation Company. This once-upscale coach carried tourists on sight-seeing excursions in what is now Denali National Park. After the Park ended MMTTC's concession, the Fageol was brought to Fairbanks and parked outside where it set deteriorating for over seven decades.

The distinctive ventilation louvres on top of the hood—a key Fageol design feature—are intact. The Hall-Scott engine (#44) and Brown-Lipe 4-speed gearbox with an overdrive top gear are still under the hood.

Around 2,500 Fageol Safety Coaches were built, and there are only five known survivors in addition to this one. Clearly, ours is in bad shape, but a rare artifact like this deserves to be saved. We moved it to the Fountainhead Development headquarters earlier this month, and will work to stabilize and preserve its remains, rather than try to restore it.

Honolulu's Exec Director of Housing, wants to convert five donated, decommissioned city buses into transitional shelters for homeless.

“The idea is to convert them into living, sleeping, showering, recreational facilities," she said.

Like the buses, supplies for the refurbishment are be

ing donated by a host of organizations. Labor will be on a volunteer basis.

"The entire design is based on the premise that you could walk in to a hardware store, buy everything you need in one go and build everything with no trade skills," she said.

The buses are designed to work in fleets. As opposed to an RV, which is more or less a house on wheels, buses will each have a specific purpose.

"We're fitting some out to be bathrooms and showers, we're fitting some out to be sleeping areas, and the design completely folds away like a little Japanese tatami mat."

While every detail of the buses has been accounted for, the reaction to them was not.

"It's completely organic, and we when we started did not even realize number one what a need there was for this, and number two how people can benefit from it...but mostly how many people want to help."

Kim is hoping to complete the first two buses this summer, and have the first five done this calendar year. Details on who will operate the buses and where they will be deployed are still being finalized.

Me, I doubt this is going to happen

Limousines and Party buses

When you have something big to celebrate, like a wedding, prom or even a anniversary, a chauffeur driven limousine ride with your closest friends and family to the venue and back, can make it really memorable. I mean going back home by getting on a cold bus is not the best way to end a great night.

Most limos can seat between 1-10 passengers but there are even bigger ones like the stretch Hummer limos that can carry up to 20 passengers comfortably. Now, they even have Limo buses which are really comfortable buses equipped with every conceivable luxury. Because of their size, they can carry more passengers making them perfect for corporate events. For example, if you have a corporate event (or thinking of a memorable night out) in San Diego, US, you can rent 45 Passenger Party Bus from the Pacific Limo Bus service. The bus has some amazing features including a 4,000 watt sound system, 2 Chrome Dancer poles (if you are into pole dancing), Hardwood Floor, Club Disco Lights, Fog Smoke Machines and of course a Center Bar cooler. Now, that's going out to party in style.

Just check out the video of the Party bus San Diego below:

Buses galore at Merseyside Transport Trust open day

THERE'S an old proverb that says "Never turn down a chance to get your MG in front of some old buses". Probably.

Joking aside, if you're into your old buses as much as your automotive antiques then this event would probably have been up your street. The Merseyside Transport Trust keep a selection of buses going back decades at their hangars in Burscough, and although they're usually kept under wraps just once in a while they venture out into the public eye, giving passengers rides around the country lanes of West Lancashire.

Not only did visitors get the chance to check out gems like the Leyland Olympian, but the trust's members managed to incorporate another of my passions - beer - into the day, by coming up with the ingenious idea of offering rides out to several of the nearby pubs using their exhibits!

If you're a fan of buses - and there are plenty of petrolheads who are - you might like to check out their website or send an email to enquiries@mttrust.co.uk

P.S: I was also approached, as I was taking pictures of my MGB GT, by a man from the North West Museum of Road Transport. The St Helens museum is holding a Classic Car Spectacular on Sunday, August 12 at their base in the town's former bus depot, between 10am and 4pm. For more infomation or to enter your classic send an email to matt@nwmort.co.uk or call 01744 451681.

Life On Cars writer in rare trip on bus!

IT WAS the shortest visit to The Concourse I've ever been on.

Not often do you get off the bus at Skelmersdale's premier shopping centre, dash in for a can of Coke and then get straight back on the bus again, but I wasn't here go shopping. For a change, the story was the journey itself.

Arriva, who provide bus services in both Sefton and West, are promising you'll arrive quicker if you take their newly-launched X85 service, which they're saying now provides the quickest link between the heart of Skelmersdale and the fairground attractions of Southport's Pleasureland amusement park.

With no rail link between the two towns, you're forced to either drive or go by bus if you're planning to make this journey, and Arriva are hoping that by introducing a service with limited stops they're going to make the second option more tempting, and boost the economies of both towns by tempting residents to travel between them.

“Southport is a very popular destination for local people, especially those wanting to go shopping or enjoy Pleasureland and other attractions for the day,” said Vernon Roby, general manager of Arriva Skelmersdale.

“We are really happy to be able to offer this new holiday service, it takes less than an hour to travel from Skelmersdale to Southport giving customers plenty of time to enjoy the day when they arrive.”

Although my trip to Skelmersdale didn't get off to a great start, with the X85 arriving at Southport's Central 12 retail park ten minutes after the timetable said it should have done, I didn't feel so bad ditching the car for a double decker that actually feels more modern than my own motor!

But most impressive of all was the slashing of the journey times you'd normally get going by bus; at just over fifty minutes by my watch, it's only slightly slower than driving, and for once I could actually feel slightly smug that I'd gone green and gone by public transport.

The only thing that worried me was it seemed I was one of a select few sharing the joys of this journey; considering it's a summer service aimed at getting Skelmersdale residents out to the seaside, the bus seemed eerily quiet going in both directions.

Even as the Life On Cars motoring writer I'm actually happy that I took the bus for a change, and chances are you will be too if you're looking for a hassle-free and quicker way of getting to Southport or Skelmersdale.

There is one thing I completely agree with the residents of Skelmersdale on though; the town's really overdue for a rail link.
