The Ferrari LaFerrari is one of the most extreme, powerful and downright exceptional production cars ever created by any manufacturer, serving as the ultimate embodiment of speed and innovation in this great era of hypercars.

As a successor to the legendary Ferrari Enzo, the LaFerrari is among the likes of the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder in an elite class of hypercars that have reached heights beyond what most manufacturers could ever dream of achieving.

This force of nature is not only armed with a hair-raising, naturally aspirated V12 engine, but also applies F1-inspired hybrid technology to further enhance its performance, and was the first flagship Ferrari to do so.

Technology and performance are where it thrives, but it also looks magnificent and drives like the best Ferrari ever made – and it might just be exactly that.

Ferrari thinks so highly of it that its bold name, “LaFerrari”, literally means “The Ferrari” – perhaps pointing out that this is the ultimate personification of the company at its best. This could well be one of the most iconic hypercars of our generation, and we’re here to bring you exclusive LaFerrari images and access from our time at Tom Hartley Cars.

How Many LaFerraris Were Made?

It’s not quite as exclusive as the Koenigsegg we saw recently, but just 499 LaFerrari examples were created and they were only made available to serious Ferrari collectors – those with at least five Ferraris to their name, apparently.

You also had to be personally approved by then-chairman Luca di Montezemolo before being able to purchase the LaFerrari.

How Much Does a LaFerrari Cost?

When it was initially launched, the LaFerrari’s price was £1,150,000 (around $1.5m), but it’s long since sold out and, if you’re lucky enough to afford one and come across one for sale in the UK, it’s likely to cost you upwards of £2.4million in 2019.

The LaFerrari’s cost is only going to continue to rise, as its appreciation rate will inevitably increase each year.

LaFerrari Top Speed, 0-60mph, and Performance

Packed with a monstrous 6.3-litre V12 engine optimised for high-rev horsepower, the LaFerrari would’ve been more powerful than most, even before adding its hybrid system.

The hybrid tech isn’t just used to make the LaFerrari more environmentally friendly, but to make this already-rapid car even faster.

The V12 perfectly coordinates with the F1-inspired Hy-Kers hybrid system (which consists of a battery pack and electric motor) to produce a mouth-watering combined output of 950bhp and 663lb-ft of torque.

It works in silence as an inconspicuous partner to the engine, effortlessly supplementing the V12’s performance by adding power, refining response and enhancing delivery.

The LaFerrari’s top speed is 218mph (350km/h), and it goes from 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in 2.9 seconds, hitting 124mph (200km/h) just four seconds later.

It set a Fiorano track time of 1m20s, which might not mean too much to you, until you find out it’s a whole 5s faster than the Enzo and 3s quicker than the F12berlinetta, making the LaFerrari the fastest road car in the company’s history. No Ferrari ever created has raced around the Fiorano as quick as the LaFerrari.

Its presence is heard before it is seen, with the roaring V12 sounding like the true epitome of power. It sends shivers down your spine as you push the ‘Engine Start’ button and bring the LaFerrari to life. We felt as if it had a similar sound to the much-loved Ferrari Enzo, despite being over a decade newer than the modern classic.

Ferrari provided a whole new definition of ‘fast’ with the LaFerrari, offering the ultimate performance backed by the most soulful soundtrack of them all, the V12.

With so much power, you’d expect to be pretty on-edge driving it, but you’re not.

There’s no doubting that LaFerrari’s appearance, sound, stats, price-tag and pretty much everything else about it is intimidating, but its driveability makes you feel at-ease (ish!) behind the wheel. As you’d expect, the handling and throttle response is razor-sharp, as is the feedback, and it’s probably the most natural-feeling luxury hybrid out there.

The LaFerrari looks every bit the hypercar – it’s mind-blowing. It looks so extreme and spaceship-like that the very sight of it is mouth-watering.

On the outside, it’s striking and bold, with a sleek profile that stays true to the classic Ferrari sports cars of the past. Walking around the car, we were able to follow the curves, vents and tiny details that have been carefully sculpted to create a beautifully smooth body.

Its prominent front wing is very F1-like, and aerodynamics obviously played a large part in how it was designed, with active aero features including front and rear diffusers, an underbody guide vane and a rear spoiler.

The aerodynamic features react automatically when the driving conditions suit, helping generate better downforce without creating unwanted drag.

If you’re more into your soft-tops and convertibles, there’s also a LaFerrari Aperta, a spider version which was introduced three years after the coupe we got to see. You don’t need us to tell you that it, too, is absolutely stunning.

So, getting inside the LaFerrari – it’s actually physically not as awkward as you’d think. It’s hardly a tight squeeze and you’re definitely not on your hands and knees trying to crawl out of it either, unlike some of the less practical supercars we’ve seen.

Once you’re in, carbon-fibre pretty much covers the cabin along with some bits of upmarket Alcantara, which gives the LaFerrari a very performance-orientated, but high-quality finish.

Its fully digital dashboard is distinctive and only adds to the spaceship-like feel on the inside, and the steering wheel is where most buttons and switches are – including the ‘Engine Start’ button and the Manettino dial, which gives you Sport, Race and Wet modes.

Something of note when we were inside the LaFerrari was the seating position; you sit very low, but it’s not necessarily a problem because the steering wheel and pedals are adjustable and can be moved towards or away from you – race-car style. There’s a nice degree of comfort and each customer has tailor-made seats fitted prior to delivery.

Being so wide, the view out the front is good but the rear view could be better, as with most hypercars. The harness is also a bit of a pain to get on quickly, but with 950bhp and hitting 218mph, the extra safety isn’t exactly a bad idea.

So Fast, So Impeccable... Where Next? 

So, a few years on from the outstanding LaFerrari’s debut, what can possibly compete with it? Where could we possibly go from here?

There’s a few in the mix, from the Bugatti Chiron and McLaren Senna, to the Koenigsegg Agera RS and upcoming Mercedes-AMG One.  

But, as far as an authentic all-rounder with an engaging drive, immaculate design and thunderous power goes, has any other hypercar quite hit the heights of the LaFerrari yet? We don’t think so. 

The LaFerrari, as its name suggests, is the utmost expression of what Ferrari strives for – excellence. You could call it the King of Kings, as it proudly represents the pinnacle of Ferrari’s work to date, incorporating all that’s great about the Prancing Horse.

New Ferrari F8 Tributo | Review, Specs and Videos


Back in 2015, the Ferrari 488 GTB made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show – stepping in as a worthy replacement for the classic 458 Italia.

A lot has happened since then: Trump became president, the UK voted to leave the EU, and now – less controversially – the new Ferrari F8 Tributo has been revealed as the replacement for the 488 GTB.  

The GTB impressed across the board, but it has now paid its dues and its successor – the Ferrari F8 Tributo – is faster, more powerful, and has an increased aerodynamic efficiency.

The stunning F8 Tributo packs Ferrari’s most powerful V8 ever created, contrary to predictions by some enthusiasts that suggested it would be a hybrid.

Ferrari bosses are also claiming that the F8 is the first of a ‘new design language’, which the legendary manufacturer hopes will epitomise the aerodynamic brilliance and extreme performance that they seek.

At first glance, this new supercar seems the ultimate package – so perhaps the McLaren 720S has a genuine rival on its hands?

claim that the F8 Tributo is one of the fastest, most thrilling, and most communicative supercars ever – a pretty bold statement to make.

But it’s not an outrageous one; the F8 is certainly there or thereabouts, and its performance figures only help justify Ferrari’s belief in the newest member of its family.

The F8 has the same twin-turbo 3.9-litre V8 that powered the 488 Pista, which happens to have won three consecutive International Engine of the Year Awards and was named the best engine of the last 20 years in 2018. 

Officially listed as the most powerful V8 engine ever created by the company, the F8 Tributo’s engine is a serious piece of kit. 

It generates 710bhp (matching the 720S) and 568lb-ft of torque, performing just as well as the hard-core Pista and improving on that of its predecessor – the 488 GTB – by 50bhp and 7lb-ft.

Some experts have hinted at the possibility of the F8 Tributo being the end of an era – with Ferrari pledging to push the development of the hybridisation and electrification of their vehicles.

How Fast is the Ferrari F8 Tributo?

Ferrari wants to create an enthralling driving experience for its customers, and it does so here with the F8 Tributo reaching 0-62mph in just 2.9 seconds – 0.1s less than the 488 GTB – and setting a 0-124mph time of just 7.8 seconds.

The F8 Tributo’s top speed also matches the Pista, maxing out at an impressive 211mph, increasing by 6mph in comparison to the 488 GTB.

That’s a faster top speed than the McLaren 600LT, the Huracán Evo and even the McLaren Senna!

Ferrari claims that this level of performance is achieved with absolutely no turbo lag – a feature we’re sure its lucky drivers will appreciate.

Not only is Ferrari’s latest model more powerful than the supercar it’s succeeding, but it’s also far lighter – weighing in at just 2,932lbs with all lightweight options included, cutting around 88lbs in total.

The Ferrari F8 Tributo’s body has been restyled and includes a new aero pack – developing features of various past models to generate state-of-the-art aero solutions which give this new F8 a boost of over 10% in terms of its aerodynamic efficiency compared to the 488 GTB.

The redesigned front S-Duct derives from the Ferrari F1 and works to produce an efficient vertical load at a rate that adds 15% to the downforce of the regular 488.

Other aerodynamic features of the F8 include:
  • A new blown rear spoiler (wider and more inclined to increase vertical load)
  • Rear flux deflectors (to reduce drag)
  • Upwashing spoiler suction (to increase vertical load)
  • A flat underbody with a new front diffuser (increasing brake cooling efficiency)
  • A rear diffuser with active aero (to maximise performance in corners and straights)

There is also a new air intake layout, deriving from the 488 Challenge, which supports the increase in power by reducing the temperature of the air that enters the engine.

There’s a LOT going on here in terms of the F8 Tributo’s aerodynamics. The body may look sleeker than ever, but almost all of its features serve a genuine purpose as Ferrari’s newly released videos demonstrate.

Overall, the F8 Tributo is one of Ferrari’s best looking supercars, especially in the iconic Rosso Scuderia colour that we’ve come to expect from the manufacturer.

Although Ferrari clearly had a vision to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the car, the F8 Tributo sacrifices none of its beauty while doing so. 

A prominent design feature is the new, slimmer LED headlights, which have decreased in size to make room for brake cooling ducts and improve the airflow around the front. And as you can see, they also look pretty cool.

The rear of the F8 is also pleasing on the eye, with a louvered Lexan engine cover added – reminiscent of the iconic F40 – to remove hot air from the bay but also to contribute to the aesthetics of the vehicle.

A New Interior?

Much of the interior remains unchanged, but there are redesigned elements within the cockpit accommodating round air vents, a new steering wheel design, new controls and a new seven-inch passenger touchscreen display – not that you’ll be able to lean forward to use it while you’re hitting those top speeds.

Also, the diameter of the steering wheel has decreased in comparison to the 488 GTB, creating a far sportier feel behind the wheel.

The Ferrari F8 Tributo’s cost has not yet been announced, but it was showcased as a fitting 488 GTB replacement at the Geneva Motor Show in both Rosso Scuderia and Blu Corsa finishes.

Ferrari was spotted testing a hybrid model prior to the show, which led to suggestions of a hybrid supercar being revealed – which, as we know, wasn’t the case. However, Ferrari CEO Louis Calmieri has recently confirmed that a brand new, track-focused hybrid model will arrive in the next two or three months.

Rather than a brand new car, many see the F8 Tributo as an upgraded 488 GTB, and rightfully so. It may only be a development of its predecessor, but it’s certainly an excellent one at that.

For now, at least, let’s appreciate Ferrari’s achievement in producing such a beautiful supercar with admirable performance figures and a vastly improved aerodynamic efficiency.

Supercars come and go and few make a big impact on the world but the Ferrari F12tdf special edition is something rather different.


With heaps of ambition, added power and even more agility, Ferrari’s special edition of the f12 is here with three simple letters to sort the men form the boys; tdf.
We borrowed a Rosso Corsa F12 tdf (pictured) to give you the best review kindly arranged by the guys at carautodriver.co.uk, and to provide a small word of caution to prospective buyers…


When it was unveiled in 2016, a new F12tdf cost £339,000 and Ferrari lovers and iconic car fans queued up to buy one. For those who are asking, ‘How many Ferrari F12tdf were made?’ then the answer is just 799.
And despite the Ferrari F12 tdf price tag, fans and collectors have seen prices rocket since then and among those who parted with their cash weren’t just exclusive clients but also celebrity petrolheads such as the chef Gordon Ramsay.

For the money, buyers got to enjoy one of the fastest Ferraris ever created with a 6.3litre V12 under the bonnet. But how fast is the Ferrari F12? Well, it has a (restricted) top speed of 211 mph.
Ferrari lovers said it was the purest of the Ferrari production cars. And they were right.

What is tdf in Ferrari?

If you are asking, ‘What is tdf in Ferrari?’ then the answer is that this car is a track-focused version of the F12berlinetta which had been unveiled the year previously and pays tribute to the Tour de France car race that was staged between 1899 and 1986.

Indeed, the design wizards at Ferrari have given the F12tdf a hint of the stylish GTO's look in its profile.

The big attraction for this model is that the F12tdf delivers more power from the same engine used in the F12 berlinetta and offers new technology in a lighter and faster vehicle while promising huge performance levels.

How impressive, you may ask? Well, the Ferrari F12 power has seriously impressive torque at 780 PS at 8500rpm and the F12tdf weighs 110kg (or 243lbs) less than its sibling at just 1,415kg - thanks to the extensive use of carbon fibre inside and outside of the car. The power-to-weight ratio for this supercar is 1.95kg (or 4.3lbs) per horsepower.
To appreciate how dynamic the car is, 80% of that power is available from 2,500rpm.

How have Ferrari added power?

Ferrari engineers have revised the inlet tracts and replaced the hydraulic tappets with mechanical ones. Whilst they are a bit noisier they allow for faster, higher revs allowing the mighty V12 to reach an impressive 8900 rpm. 

These and other modifications have boosted power from a mere 730bhp to a more remarkable 770bhp.


Aerodynamics are improved with the bodywork gaining winglets to direct airflow a la formula 1 and the rear track is wider to accommodate the active rear steering. 

The gear ratios in the 7 speed dual clutch automatic gearbox are shorter which give the tdf a very quick 0-62 mph time of, a not too tardy, 2.9 seconds. 


As most sports car fans will know, anything under 3 seconds is serious supercar territory. This V12 lump produces 80% of its torque from a low 2000rpm so really pushes you into the seat.


F12tdf debuted a new four-wheel steering system

This level of power means that to help deal with the rigours of pushing the car to its limits on a track the F12tdf debuted a new four-wheel steering system, known as the Virtual Short Wheelbase, with an 'active' rear axle which enables the rear wheels to pivot and deliver more grip and control on corners.

And you'll need it when the engine starts to whine through the gears and Ferrari have also boosted the downforce to cope with the potential of the car taking off with the front bumper design – along with improved wings and louvres. The model is also fitted with three pairs of GT racing strakes, or diffusers, which also boost downforce.

There's also a higher and longer rear spoiler helping with a more upright rake and a rear diffuser uses three active flaps to accelerate and increase the airflow underneath the car.
For those car fans who love the specs: the special edition Ferrari F12tdf delivers 230kg of downforce at 132mph. That is, Ferrari says, an 87% improvement on the sibling.

Difference over the standard F12

So, what was the big difference over the standard of F12 in terms of performance?
The  6.3litre engine delivers plenty of torque and uses a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox for quicker upshifting and downshifting. The engine will then power the F12tdf onto 124mph in 7.1 seconds and then onto its top speed of 211mph.

With all of this power, not all cars fans will get to enjoy the F12tdf's performance but the carmaker appreciates that not everyone has the skills necessary so the front tyres are wider to help increase lateral grip and increase the tendency for oversteering - usually this makes driving at the limit a touch too exciting and difficult for inexperienced drivers.

This is where the active rear axle also helps to help deliver agility so non-professional drivers can enjoy the extraordinary performance with some degree of confidence. Though most drivers will be wary on a racetrack once they've let the hammer fall and the F12tdf sets off like a missile.

It's this issue of delivering a supercar that non-professional drivers can handle that has been tackled effectively with the Ferrari F12tdf specs: the four-wheel steering system not only delivers responsiveness but ensures that the rear wheels are steering in the same direction as the front ones to boost stability.

Ferrari claim that the new wheelbase delivers a better response than the 599 GTO with more predictable precision to suit drivers of various abilities. The handling is also helped by the magnetic dampers being retuned and stiffer springs being added along with the firm's extreme design brake callipers which feature on the LaFerrari.

The only place to enjoy the engineering delights is on a racetrack where the throttle can be opened up. Here, the F12tdf delivers great handling and agility with precise steering which delivers excellent feedback. The chassis has been chosen to deliver a responsive drive but with the front end grip being so strong, there is little room for error.

This means that inexperienced drivers may find that any slight mistake they make at speed will be magnified by the car until they appreciate the responsiveness and handling more effectively.
On the roads, the F12tdf has a firm set-up so rough roads will be uncomfortable, but smoother roads help show why Ferrari are so proud of this creation – it’s car that still needs to be respected on the roads and handled as such. There’s definitely a lot of good fun to be had while behind the wheel.

The car delivers a balanced and smooth ride

The other issue is that once the driver gets to appreciate that there is no chance of oversteering into a slide and that the steering is precise means the car delivers a balanced and smooth ride with the aggressive power being controlled effectively.

There’s no doubt the four-wheel steering takes some getting used to but driving at speed into corners can be done with confidence.

Even with this level of handling, it's for the engine that the F12tdf offers a stand-out performance and drivers will get to enjoy the raw and impressive levels of power being delivered to the wheels so quickly and responsibly.

For a rear-drive machine with a big front engine, drivers get to enjoy a glamorous and aggressive sports car that delivers superlative levels of performance. However, most of the buyers probably don’t push the car to its limits on a racetrack in competition, but if they have made the most of track days then they would have had a thrilling experience.

How does that v12 engine sound?

Ludicrous acceleration is not all the tdf offers, at the end of the day this is a Ferrari V12 and it sounds glorious.

The howl of a Ferrari V12 engine is always going to bring out goose bumps, and is simply one of those definitive sounds that makes everyone turn to look, whether a car fanatic or not. 

This one also has the sports exhaust to help the engine breathe and aid the increase in horsepower making this F12tdf look and sound like the ultimate Ferrari right down to the red brake callipers visible through the dark wheels. 

How does the tdf corner?

Impressive acceleration is all very well going incredibly fast in a straight line but Ferrari’s have a reputation for being able to go round corners rather quickly as well, and the F12 tdf is no exception. To give it faster entry and exit corner speed Ferrari bolted on bigger 285 section front tyres. Now that the front could get in and out of a corner quickly the trick was to get the rear to follow. 
Ferrari fitted an Active Rear Steering unit which turns the rear wheels, in most cases, in the same direction as the fronts. To say it turns the wheels is slightly misleading; it changes the toe angle by approximately one degree. 

What this means is that the rear now follows the front with a greater degree of stability and agility. Add to this the fact that the spring rates are 20% stiffer giving a firm but by no means uncomfortable ride - and you approach a corner with the confidence that you will still be on the black stuff when you start feeding in the power as you come out the other side. 

The steering is two turns lock to lock and gives a race car type feel as less input is needed to sweep through bends.


Track-focused creation

For a great car like this the fuel figures are irrelevant but it returns 15 l per 100km which is a reasonable (for the power and performance) 18mpg and emissions are 360g/km. This probably explains why this track-focused creation isn't really for the public roads.

To underline this performance, the F12tdf went around Ferrari's testing facility at Fiorano quicker than the Enzo in just 1 minute 21 seconds.

It helps too - and brings confidence to the person sat behind the steering wheel - that there are big brakes fitted to the car which will bring the vehicle to a stop within 30 metres when travelling at 62mph.


For those lucky enough to sit inside one, the Ferrari f12 interior features a racing cockpit that is well-designed and means business! It's a comfortable place to enjoy the delights of the F12tdf and there are knee pads where the glovebox should be and the seats use a technical fabric and the floor mats are patterned aluminium.
And if you fancy picking up a Ferrari F12tdf for sale, then you'll need a big wallet to do so.

That's because earlier this year a limited edition Ferrari F12tdf was put up for auction for a cool £1 million – that’s an appreciation of three times what it was worth when bought new two years previously. Though the car was withdrawn from sale, interest might have been helped by the fact there were only 150 miles on the clock - so that really is one careful previous owner!

Soaring price of the F12tdf

Part of the reason for the soaring price of the F12tdf is down to its rarity, but there is no escaping the fact that this limited edition really is a fabulous creation paying tribute to the iconic Ferraris of the 1950s and 1960s.

Essentially, the Ferrari F12tdf might be a tribute act to the iconic motors of that generation but it's one of the true all-time modern great front engine supercars and deserves all of the plaudits it gets.

A note for prospective buyers

A word of caution- this is not a car that you just jump into and go quickly (unless your name is Sebastian Vettel).  It is a special edition Ferrari and as such has to be treated with respect. 

However, once you have learned all the race car inspired quirks, it is a feat of engineering that will put a huge smile on your face. With its vast amounts of grunt and impressive cornering grip, the rear end of the F12 tdf is the view most other drivers will see. Having said that the rear end of the tdf is rather pleasing on the eye.

The first and most difficult challenge Ferrari always faces when it decides to develop a new model is to push the boundaries of its own achievements yet again. This challenge is made all the tougher when the task at hand involves designing a new 12-cylinder engine, the power unit that hailed the start of the glorious Prancing Horse story 70 years ago in 1947.
On this occasion, intensive research and development focused on exploiting Ferrari's wealth of track-derived engineering know-how has produced a unique model designed to offer its drivers both benchmark performance across the board and the most riveting and rewarding driving experience possible. Whilst, of course, also guaranteeing the superb comfort on longer trips that is the signature of a genuine Grand Tourer berlinetta. Ferrari's past is studded with just such cars, a long and illustrious list of exceptional models that have gone down in automotive history.

 The obsessive pursuit of the most seamless melding possible of state-of-the-art running gear with a harmonious yet edgy design from the ever-inventive Ferrari Styling Centre, has produced a near-perfect aerodynamic package.
The Ferrari 812 Superfast's exceptionally futuristic, finely-honed lines also, however, clothe Prancing Horse power at its rawest, as an entirely new 12-cylinder engine of unprecedented efficiency and might was designed for the car.
That engine's output has been boosted by 60 cv compared to the F12berlinetta, so that it unleashes a massive 800 CV, making the 812 Superfast the most powerful and fastest road-going Ferrari ever built (with the exception, of course, of the mid-rear-engined, special limited-series 12-cylinders). The Ferrari 812 Superfast thus ushers in a new era in Ferrari 12-cylinder history, in doing so, building on the invaluable legacies of the F12berlinetta and F12tdf.To make full use of that huge power and to guarantee perfect weight distribution, the car exploits a highly evolved transaxle architecture that couples a front-mounted engine with a rear-mounted transmission.
The Ferrari 812 Superfast is equipped with leading-edge vehicle dynamics control systems and components. It is striking for both its highly innovative design and aero package, as well as its unparalleled handling. It is also the first Ferrari to sport EPS (Electric Power Steering).
Simply put, the 812 Superfast is the new benchmark for mid-front-engined sports cars. And at its heart is the new 12-cylinder which has forged its character.
Like all cars with Prancing Horse DNA, this new berlinetta delivers exhilarating feedback both on road and track, but equally promises exceptionally fluid handling and ride comfort that drivers will appreciate on longer journeys.
The Ferrari 812 Superfast, in fact, is aimed at clients that demand the most powerful and exclusive Ferrari in the range. They want a blisteringly high-performance car, but refuse to compromise on the kind of versatility that will allow them to thoroughly appreciate driving it as a 360-degree experience.
Engine and transmission
The challenge Ferrari tackled with the 812 Superfast was to design the most powerful road-going engine in the marque's history (800 cv, 123 cv/l) whilst contemporaneously cutting fuel consumption and emissions, and, naturally, retaining the inimitable Ferrari 12-cylinder soundtrack.
At the development stage, the engineers set themselves the goal of exceeding the specific power output of the F12berlinetta's V12 which itself delivered class-topping performance. To do so, they decided to focus their efforts principally on optimising the intake system and combustion efficiency to fully exploit the increase in the engine's displacement from 6.2 to 6.5 litres. These aspects increased the maximum amount of air that could be drawn into the engine (and thus its power output) thereby boosting its efficiency.
The development process resulted in a maximum power output of 800 cv at 8,500 rpm, a new benchmark for the Ferrari range, in addition to a specific power output of 123 cv/l, a completely unprecedented figure for an engine front-mounted in a production car.
The torque curve illustrates this impressive improvement on the F12berlinetta in terms of acceleration and instantaneous power, particularly at high revs. The engine's power is underscored by a full, rich exhaust sound that exploits the acoustic clout delivered by its increased displacement.
These performance levels were achieved in part by optimising the engine design and in part by introducing innovations, such as the use of a 350 bar direct injection system for the very first time on a spark-ignition engine, and the control system for the variable geometry inlet tracts, developed on naturally-aspirated F1 engines, which is a further evolution on its application on the special limited-series F12tdf.
These systems allow the increase in displacement from 6.2 to 6.5 litres to be exploited to maximise power output whilst retaining excellent pick-up even at low revs.
The high pressure injection system also improves nebulisation of the injected fuel thus dramatically reducing the the amount of particulates emitted when the catalytic converter is warming up, ensuring the engine complies with all emissions regulations.
The engine's maximum power-to-fuel consumption ratio has also been improved, attesting to the engine's exceptional efficiency in urban driving contexts. This was achieved in part as a result of Stop&Start On the Move strategies which cut and restart the engine while the car is moving.
Particular attention was also paid to calibrating the Manettino settings to enhance the engine's potential and the sensation of extreme power delivered by the car. That said, the driver will always be able to easily and confidently dose the massive torque available with the accelerator pedal, thanks to smooth, progressive power delivery at all engine speeds.
The result of all these developments is a boost in maximum power output to 800 cv at 8,500 rpm (an impressive 60 cv more than the F12berlinetta) and maximum torque of 718 Nm @ 7,000 rpm - a completely unprecedented achievement for a naturally-aspirated Ferrari production engine.
A significant 80% of maximum torque is available at just 3,500 rpm, improving both flexibility and pick-up at lower revs. The shape of the power curve, which rises constantly all the way to the maximum revs of 8,500 rpm, and the rapidity with which engine speed increases, thanks to low inertia, give occupants the feeling of boundless power and acceleration. The latter sensation comes courtesy of the overall increase in maximum power output and the optimisation of the aforementioned power curve between 6,500 and 8,900 rpm, which maximises the average horse power exploitable for press-on track driving when engine revs are kept consistently high.
The exhaust system geometry was evolved to increase and balance the sound from the engine compartment and tailpipes, with a 6-into-1 manifold. The aim being, of course, to enhance the car's already extreme, sporty character. The resulting engine sound is strong and smooth inside the cabin in all driving conditions.
Transmission
The new Ferrari 812 Superfast is fitted with Ferrari's F1 dual-clutch transmission which has been further evolved to meet the car's track driving performance targets and cope with the boost in maximum revs to 8,900 rpm. The gear ratios on all of the gears have been shortened by an average of 6% to exploit the extra performance and higher revs to the fullest as well as to improve the car's acceleration without compromising pick-up in higher gears.
There was particular focus on calibrating the gear-shift strategy to enhance the car's sportiness, further slashing response times and creating a feeling of massive power and speed both in terms of longitudinal acceleration and auditory perception of the rising rpms. In both up- and down-shifts, the transition time has been reduced by 30%. Combined with the shortened gear ratios, these modifications, mean that occupants will instantly feel the car's powerful response to the throttle.
On the track, this sharpened response equates to more down-shifts in the same time interval, when the driver uses the multi-down function (keeping the steering wheel-mounted Down shift paddle depressed with the Manettino in Sport position).
Vehicle dynamics
The Ferrari 812 Superfast is the first Ferrari to introduce Electric Power Steering (EPS) which, in line with Ferrari tradition, is used to fully exploit the potential of the car in terms of performance by integrating it with all of the electronic vehicle dynamics controls.
The car also sees the introduction of the Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0 system (PCV) which, starting from the experience gained with the F12tdf, combines electric front-wheel steering assistance with the mechanical concept built around tyre dimensions and the rear-wheel steering. All integrated with the vehicle dynamics control systems based on Version 5.0 of the SSC, with the aim of improving the agility and response time to steering wheel inputs of the 812 Superfast.
The integration of the EPS enabled Ferrari's engineers to introduce functionalities to support the driver's performance experience by means of the primary interface with the road: the steering wheel.
Ferrari Peak Performance (FPP): when cornering, the steering wheel torque will provide the driver with an indication that the car is getting closer to its limit of grip, helping the control of that dynamic state.
Ferrari Power Oversteer (FPO): in case of oversteer, most frequently induced while powering out of corners, the steering wheel torque will give the driver feedback to give steering wheel inputs that are coherent with realigning the car correctly.
Both functions are aimed at extending the driver's experience of the performance delivered by the Ferrari 812 Superfast, while not interfering with the driver's control over the steering wheel input. The driver remains the key to the driving experience.
The mechanical set-up sees the adoption of tyres developed specifically for Ferrari by Michelin and Pirelli and retain the same sizes front and rear (275/315) introduced on the F12tdf to optimize the Passo Corto Virtuale concept.
The Brembo Extreme Design brakes, which previously equipped the LaFerrari, are the most efficient ever developed by Ferrari. Combined with the Hi-Performance ABS of the 9.1 Premium ESP, the braking performance from 100 km/h is improved by 5.8% compare to the F12berlinetta.
Aerodynamics
The Ferrari 812 Superfast's aero design is part of Ferrari's ongoing commitment to continually improving performance with each new model, both in terms of speed and augmented vehicle dynamics for a more exhilarating driving experience.
The development guidelines aimed to achieve exceptionally high aerodynamic efficiency figures through boosting of the downforce that influences a car's stability without increasing drag as the latter would negatively impact fuel consumption and maximum speed.
The aerodynamic coefficient values delivered by the Ferrari 812 Superfast are a significant improvement on those of the F12berlinetta. Mobile aero solutions, whether mechanically activated (active mobile aerodynamics) or activated by the pressure of the air itself (passive mobile aerodynamics), guarantee very low drag values. The choices made in this area were heavily influenced by those debuted on the special F12berlinetta-derived F12tdf, with which the 812 Superfast shares the same downforce values. All its aerodynamic coefficients, however, have been improved.
To the side of the air intakes for engine and brake cooling, is a turning vane on the front bumper which is designed to channel air flows striking the front of car to ensure they hug its flanks, thereby reducing the width of the car's wake. This in turn appreciably reduces overall drag.
Front downforce generation is entrusted for the most part to a pair of diffusers just ahead of the front wheels, which increase the amount of air drawn in by the underbody. To cancel out the drag associated with them, the diffusers have been equipped with a mobile aero system. When this activates, it completely stalls the diffusers, fairing in the wheel. The mobile surface integrated into the diffuser ramp is activated by the pressure of the air which, as it enters from the lower intake on the outside of the bumper, is channelled towards the mobile surface. When the car reaches a speed where the pressure in the duct is stronger than the calibrated pre-load of an elastic spring, the mobile surface opens, thereby reducing the car's drag and improving front downforce.
The front diffusers' capacity to generate downforce is boosted by generous air evacuation from the front wheelarch along the side of the car. This vent on the flanks also directs the energised air flow from the diffusers on the front underbody, preventing pressure build-ups inside the wheelarch and thus improving downforce and cutting drag. This effect is maximised by two sculpted air intakes on the front bonnet by the side of the headlights. The flow is channelled by a specific duct to the front section of the inside of the wheelarch, where it reduces pressure, before energising the flow exiting along the flanks.
The spoiler on the car's tail also generates downforce. The trailing edge of the spoiler is 30 mm higher than on the F12berlinetta as per the F12tdf. However, unlike the latter, it has not been extended rearwards in depth to avoid changing the car's dimensions. This has increased drag but is compensated for by the unusual gap at the bottom of the rear screen ahead of the spoiler. This discontinuity causes a separation in the air flow from the rear window, creating longitudinal vortices which boost compression on the surface of the bottom of the windscreen, thereby reducing drag associated with the downforce generated by the spoiler. The shape of the rear wheelarch has also been crafted to guarantee efficient downforce generation. In fact, the lift naturally generated by the way the body curves over the wheelarches has been minimised by introducing an aerodynamic by-pass between the bodywork and the inner rear wheelarch. Rather than following the curvature of the flank in that area, which would create lift, the air flowing over the car's belt line enters the intake behind the rear quarterlight. It is then channelled into a duct that allows it to exit in front of the rear spoiler. The lift effect of the wheelarches is thus minimised, generating downforce without adding any extra drag.
Three pairs of curved dams that act as vortex generators were adopted for the front underbody and are responsible for 30% of the increase in downforce compared to the F12berlinetta. The dams create a ground effect by generating powerful vortices and reducing the wake from the wheels to the absolute minimum, further boosting the flat underbody's downforce generation capabilities.
Unlike their F12tdf counterparts, the dams have new blowing slots which, by reducing overall pressure on the front side of the dams, boosts their efficiency, with the result that, despite the downforce generated remaining the same, drag introduced in the area is cut by 15%.
Because of the powerful suction created by the rear spoiler, the rear diffuser has been completely redesigned to enhance its extraction power. Firstly, the diffuser's trailing edge now features a wing in a deep recess created in the bumper. Air flows from both the lower and upper surfaces strike the splitter which extends across the entire width of the diffuser, boosting the downforce generated by the latter by 12%. Since the rear diffuser is one of the main contributors to downforce generation and the resulting drag, it has also been given a system of three active flaps which rotate to a 14° angle in the minimal drag configuration to completely stall the diffuser, thereby significantly reducing overall drag.
Exterior
Designed by Ferrari Design, the new Ferrari 812 Superfast redefines the formal language of front-engined V12 Ferraris' proportions without altering either its exterior dimensions or interior space and comfort.
Seen in silhouette, the 812 Superfast has a fastback sleekness: a two-box design with a high tail reminiscent of the glorious 365 GTB4 (Daytona) of 1969, visually lowering an aggressive rear spoiler designed to guarantee downforce. The draped design of the flanks visually shortens the tail and is characterised by sharply slanted crease lines and impressively muscular wheelarches that imbue the Ferrari 812 Superfast with the power and aggression warranted by its imposing V12. Full-LED headlights integrated into the design of the sculpted air intakes on the bonnet also emphasise that front muscle, integrating with, and wrapping around the front wheelarch.
The Ferrari 812 Superfast's sumptuously sculptural, three-dimensional flanks are characterised by a striking vent behind the front wheels designed to suck high-pressure air from the wheelarches and then channel it along the doors.
The rear diffuser includes a suspended splitter that increases the diffuser surfaces by turning them into bi-plane wing, allowing the air to be drawn between the lower diffuser and the splitter.
At the rear, four round tail-lights inspired by Ferrari tradition emphasise a design crafted around horizontal lines and give the Ferrari 812 Superfast a broad, imposing stance, visually lowering both spoiler and the very compact cabin without, however, sacrificing its space or that of the boot.
Interior
The cabin has been radically redesigned to imbue it with an even sportier character. Light, compact volumes hug the contours of the interior structures to the extent that the latter are visible in certain areas. These ultra-taut surfaces are deliberately layered and broken up to create voids with the result that the main elements seem to float. The overall effect is both thoroughbred racing eagerness and lean elegance that never feels overstated.
The horizontal dash loops stylishly around the central air vents for a sophisticated, sculptural, yet supremely stylish look that is also a nod to the LaFerrari's cockpit.
An additional air vent also allowed the designers to lighten the look of the dash still further by creating a "cleft" in the central section that further emphasises the fact that metallic elements stretch out into the upholstered volumes.
The driver zone and central recesses featuring contrasting trim to further underscore their dynamic forms.
The steering wheel and its commands, the satellite pods on either side of it and the interplay of volumes and contrasting materials, combine to create an extreme cockpit in which all of the various elements are angled towards the all-important driver, around whom the volumes curve to highlight his role.
Horizontal character lines create very distinct driver-oriented volumes that also pull off the delicate feat of not excluding the passenger from the action.
The beautifully crafted trimming both at the centre of the dash and around the glove compartment create the just right sense of Ferrari's signature combination of the artisanal and the high tech.
The seats follow a diapason design language and exploit that expansiveness to create an interplay of solids and voids that lend character to the seat and backrest.
The seats differ from and contrast with the rest of the interior surfaces, thanks to their perforated leather trim which adds a sporty touch to the new styling.
In short, taught forms and cleverly structured volumes combine with superb ergonomics and a light sporty language to yield a top-of-the-range seat.
