Modern smartphones look a bit different than ones from just a few years ago: there’s the double rear cameras, of course, but more pervasive is the fingerprint sensor. A fingerprint sensor built into a phone offers a highly convenient form of security, but is also becoming an important component in making mobile payments.

While a fingerprint sensor is included on all the big flagship handsets, those tend to cost $600 or more. Can you get fingerprint sensor on a (much) cheaper phone? Yes, yes you can. 
Moto E4

Available as of last week, the 5-inch Moto E4 is the fourth generation version of Motorola’s most budget-friendly Moto series, offering consumers a bunch of features — including a fingerprint sensor — at as low as $99. This phone sports a quad-core Snapdragon processor alongside 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot, 4G LTE support, dual microphones, and even a classy fine gold color.

Though the phone costs $129.99 unlocked, it is currently being offered through Republic Wireless and to certain Amazon customers for $99. There’s also a Verizon variant with the same price as the unlocked model, though only in the black color option.

ZTE Max XL

Newly launched by ZTE is its massive 6-inch ZTE Max XL, a handset with a bunch of features and a tiny, relatively speaking, $99 price tag. This phone has a 6″ IPS Full HD display topped with Gorilla Glass, an octo-core processor, microSD support, 3990mAh battery, a 13MP rear camera and, most importantly for this list, a built-in fingerprint sensor. This handset is available through Boost Mobile and Best Buy.

Blu Studio Touch

Phone company Blu offers many varieties of inexpensive unlocked smartphones, and though you can only use them on GSM carriers, they’re a great option if you’re looking to save money. The Blu Studio Touch is one such phone, and it brings with it a fingerprint sensor, as well as a 5-inch HD display, an 8MP rear camera, 2500mAh battery, 4G LTE support, and Android Marshmallow.

Though the phone is very inexpensive at $90 – $99 (depending on store), it’s important to note that it only has a 1GHz quad-core MediaTek processor and 1GB of RAM. That’s fine if you primarily send messages, make calls, and browse Reddit, but will be frustrating if you try to do much more than that.

Coolpad Conjr

There’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Coolpad, but it exists and it has some decent budget smartphones. The Coolpad Conjr offers a fingerprint sensor as one of multiple notable features, others including dual-SIM support, 4G LTE, a 13MP rear camera, a quad-core processor with 3GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage (plus a microSD card slot). This phone hits many sweet spots, not the least of which is its $149.99 USD price tag.

iPhone 5s

This one is cheating a bit because it isn’t new, but we’re including it because it is cheap and it is still a nice phone. If you really don’t like Android but you can’t afford the latest iPhone model, the iPhone 5s can now be purchased unlocked (and used) for around $150, give or take twenty, and it comes with a fingerprint sensor. That makes it around the same price as the Coolpad phone listed above, but with much better quality. Where can you find a used iPhone 5s to purchase? Swappa is a popular option, as is Glyde, eBay, and Best Buy Pre-Owned.

CONCLUSION
A fingerprint sensor is quickly becoming a must-have feature, one that extends beyond mere phone locking to encompass mobile payments and online purchase authorizations. Though you’d be best off spending your money on a high-end phone that will last for years, that’s not always an option and there are some excellent, inexpensive phones on the market. Give the Moto E4 a long look, as it is arguably the best (new) phone on the above list, but you can’t go wrong with any of them.

Moto X4 May Come To Project Fi By Later Date Of This Year

Last week, we saw the MVNO state that a new “mid-tier” device would be coming to the carrier later this year. However, there was no mention as to who the device would be coming from.

Some (myself included) assumed this was a tip that Google would look to get into the mid-range market with its next lineup of Pixel devices. However, Evan Blass of VentureBeat claims that won’t be the case.

Instead, the Moto X4 is likely to be that device to make waves for current and potential Project Fi subscribers. Unfortunately, there isn’t much information available regarding the Moto X4, other than leaks confirming the moniker, while also confirming the device to reside in the mid-range market.

Hopefully, we’ll learn more about the Moto X4 sooner rather than later, as Motorola and Lenovo look to make waves in the 2nd half of 2017.

Normal Samsung Galaxy S8 is Reportedly Selling More Than The Galaxy S8+ In The USA

There’s no question that the market is still headed toward the “bigger is better’ direction when it comes to our mobile devices. Whether consumers see the value in more screen real estate, or perhaps just better battery life, most folks tend to opt for the bigger of two devices when shopping around for a new smartphone.

This was exactly the case with the Samsung Galaxy S8 which saw the device’s display growing once again, reaching sizes of 5.8-inch for the “smaller” model and 6.3-inches for the larger S8+. That may sound excessive, but Samsung managed to change up the aspect ratio, making the device taller (instead of wider) by stretching out the aspect ratio. 


It seems they may have hit a sweet spot with consumers — at least here in the US — but instead of the bigger model being the most popular, it’s actually the smaller S8 model that’s reportedly been outperforming sales of the S8+. This is actually quite exciting for a small phone lover like myself, as we could finally start seeing more one-handed devices launching in the future.

I will say, I have noticed a lot of chatter from readers in the comments or just on social media about how the S8+ was just a little too unwieldy, so it seemed like many people tended to opt for the smaller model (despite the surprisingly mediocre battery life).

Which leads me to my next question: for those of you that purchased the Galaxy S8, which model did you get: the regular S8 or the larger S8+?

Apple Reportedly Slashes iPhone, iPad and Mac Prices in India

Apple is slashing the market retail price of its product portfolio including iPhones, iPads and Macs in India starting July 1. Apple has not confirmed whether the price cut is based on the new tax reform, but CEO Tim Cook recently appreciated the government's move to implement GST during PM Modi's visit to the United States. Under the GST regime, smartphones are now taxed uniformly at 12 percent, while they were previously taxed anywhere between 8 to 20 percent depending on the state. 

The Cupertino-based tech giant is offering up to 7.2 percent discount on the iPhone range in India. Apple's iPhone SE with 32GB storage now starts at Rs 26,000, a discount of Rs 1,200, while the 128GB model gets discounted by Rs 2,200 to a retail price of Rs 35,000. The iPhone 6s 32GB and 128GB models are now priced at Rs 46,900 and Rs 55,900 respectively, while the larger iPhone 6s Plus will retail for Rs 56,100 and Rs 65,000 respectively for the 32GB and 128GB storage variants. 


Apple is offering a maximum discount on its premium iPhone 7 Plussmartphone. The Apple iPhone 7 Plus with 128GB gets a price cut of Rs 6,600 and will now retail for Rs 85,400. The iPhone 7 Plus 128GB variant was announced in India at a retail price of Rs 92,000. The iPhone 7 starts at Rs 56,200 for the 32GB variant, Rs 65,200 for the 128GB variant and Rs 74,400 for the 256GB variant.




Apple is also cutting the price of its iPad lineup with the newly announced 10.5-inch iPad Pro getting a price cut even before it goes on sale. The new 12.9-inch Ipad Pro with 512GB storage will retail for Rs 97,000, down from the 1 lakh plus price tag at the time of launch. The 10.5-inch iPad Pro now starts at Rs 50,800 for the 64GB WiFi-only variant and goes all the way up to Rs 84,500 for the 512GB variant with Wi-Fi and Cellular support.

The price of Apple MacBook Air remains unchanged, but the new 12-inch MacBook now starts at Rs 1,04,800, down from Rs 1,09,900. The 13-inch Macbook Pro, on the other hand, gets a discount of Rs 5,000 on the base model. The 13-inch MacBook Pro now starts at Rs 1,04,900 for the non-Touch Bar model, and goes up to Rs 1,64,100 for the 512GB variant with Touch Bar. The 15-inch MacBook Pro will retail at Rs 1,95,800 and Rs 2,28,100 respectively.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly stated that India remains one of the top priority markets for the company. With the new price cut, Apple seems to be passing the benefits of GST to consumers.

BLU Releases Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update For Life One X

Bold Like Us in short BLU is another smartphone manufacturer founded in 2009 and headquartered in Florida, United States. As implied by their brand name, they are very bold in making smartphones as well as rolling updates (sarcastic).

Life One X is the favorite smartphone for many of its users. But as a surprise for all its users, it rolled out an Android update. Rolling an Android update doesn’t seem surprising. But on a second look, it was 2015 update (Android Marshmallow). We are in mid-2017 and BLU is rolling out 2015 updates which are obsolete.

Budget phones don’t see updates very often. Life One X is an entry-level smartphone which costs nothing more than $99. It is less likely to expect further updates from BLU for Life One X. One more interesting thing is that this update is not listed on their official site. You can expect after a year or so!!

The marshmallow update for Life One X is around 1322 MB in size. Navigate to Settings->About Device->Wireless Update. Life One X users will find the Marshmallow Update there. It will automatically download the update without any interruption. Once you select install now, the smartphone will enter recovery mode and update the Android Version to 6.0.

ONEPLUS 5: Here Are Strong Reasons Why You Should Buy The Oneplus 5

The OnePlus 5 was highly anticipated by fans. Since a few days ago, the smartphone has been available on the OnePlus website. The question is: should you buy it? Here are a few things that might convince you.

High performance
Performance is one of the biggest strengths of the OnePlus 5. The Chinese manufacturer threw in everything in terms of technical configurations for the phone: it not only has one of the best processors on the market, the Snapdragon 835, but also has a huge 8 GB of RAM. This is so much that we wondered whether it’s even worth having such a big amount, but in terms of showing off, the OnePlus 5 does a very good job. 


In practice, the phone knows really puts on a good show On a daily basis, it shows great flexibility, with no sign of weakness. Thanks to the processor and the antennas, the connection speed is very fast and the UFS 2.1 memory ensures good responsiveness when launching apps. If you’re a follower of theoretical results, below you’ll find the benchmark results compared to those obtained on the Galaxy S8. However, do beware of the results, the Chinese manufacturer was singled out for cheating on some benchmarks, but we still don’t understand the intent given its technical record.

A high-quality camera
It's no secret: a high-end device must have a high quality camera. OnePlus has passed this challenge with flying colors. Like many of its competitors, it offers a dual camera at the rear, with one sensor offering 16MP for a f / 1.7 aperture, and the other 20MP for a f / 2.6 aperture. Obviously, there’s image stabilization, but unlike some competitors it’s not optical, but electronic. At the front, there is a 16MP sensor with a f / 2.0 aperture, again with an electronic stabilizer.

Given the facts, you now know what hardware you’re dealing with. The photos are of good quality, although they aren’t able to compete with the Google Pixel, which is still the undefeated champion in this field. Although the brightness is good and the pictures look great, it can get a bit more difficult if you’re in a darker environment - you see this for many smartphone brands. In a world where we use more and more accessories, Bluetooth has become an important feature. High-speed charging

In practice, you get 60% charge in just 30 minutes of charging. As mentioned by another AndroidPIT editor, the charge time of smartphone (and tablet) batteries is proportional to the charge level: the higher the battery percentage, the longer it takes to charge the device. A good price/performance ratio
Consumers almost always consider the price of products to be excessive, that's a given. The OnePlus 5 is no exception to that rule, some find it too expensive, especially if one takes into account the increasing price tag on the last few OnePlus models. But one must see things from another perspective: the OnePlus 5 almost has as much potential (in all categories combined) as other high-end devices on the market, and it’s presented at a much lower price.

Weight Of The LG G Pad IV 8.0 FHD Is The Same As A Soda Can

While the trend in smartphones is to push bezels out of the way, the trend in tablets is to push out weight. Admittedly, save for a very small number, Android tablets are missing out on that trend. The comes along LG with its 4th gen G Pad tablet that boasts of a weight of 290 g. That almost just as much as a can of Coca Cola, or so LG says. It doesn’t hurt that this is an 8-inch tablet with a 6.9 mm thickness as well. 

What does hurt is that the fact that the LG G Pad IV 8.0 FHD is a mid-range tablet through and through. It is powered by Qualcomm’s mid-range mobile processor, the Snapdragon 435 with only 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. And if the name didn’t give it away, it only has a 1920×1080 pixel resolution. Admittedly, at that smaller 8.0-inch size, it’s going to be actually decent. 


This 4th gen G Pad’s saving grace is its software. It has Android 7.0 right off the bad. It’s not the latest 7.1.1 but at least not a Marshmallow only. That does mean it has “dual window” split screen functionality from the get go. LG also throws in an “Easy Mode”, its version of a blue light filter for reading, which has a dedicated physical “Q button” at the side of the tablet. And, of course, its usual Knock Code for quickly unlocking the device in a secure fashion.


Unlike most mid-tier tablets, the G Pad IV has LTE built-in which, according to LG, can also be used for phone calls, making it a very large tablet. The LG G Pad IV 8.0 FHD (LTE) goes on sale in Korea on the 4th of July for 352,000 KRW ($310), directly from LG U+ stores. No word yet on international availability.

LG is also making available a “PlusPack” accessory for 82,000 KRW ($72). This big but still portable box does multiple duties of being a stand, speaker, external battery and even additional USB ports for the tablet. This, however, can only be bought from LG’s SmartWorld mobile app.

OnePlus 5 Stereo Recording Fails To Invert And This Is Not Good

OnePlus just can’t seem to catch a break. Which isn’t exactly surprising considering how they themselves painted a large target on their back by boasting about being the flagship killer and never settling for anything less. Although less egregious than its “natural” jelly scrolling effect, this “non-inverted” stereo audio recording is going to throw of some users, especially those who love to capture memories on their smartphones.

Not all phones support stereo audio when recording video, but those that do are at least smart enough to detect the phone’s orientation. In a nutshell, this means that whichever mic is on your right will properly record audio for the right channel. If you rotate the phone 180 degrees so that the left mic becomes the right mic, the phone’s software will also automatically adjust left and right audio channels to match. 


Or at least they should. OnePlus probably didn’t get the memo as in the demo video below. Please note that to experience this properly, you will need to listen either with stereo speakers or with headphones. And just to be clear, the phone shown in the video is a OnePlus One. The OnePlus 5 is the one recording it.

In case you don’t have either audio equipment, here’s what’s happening. When the OnePlus One audio source is move to the right of the screen, the audio is recorded on left channel. Moving it to the left, on the other hand, causes the audio to be recorded on the right channel. This despite the mics being on the physical right and left side, respectively.

This means that the OnePlus 5 doesn’t invert audio channels based on the orientation of the device. Which is almost too ironic considering its problem of having an inverted display panel. Fortunately, this could be easily fixed with a software update. That is, unless OnePlus insists that this is also natural, which implies that you’re just holding it wrong.

Sony Will Launch Its ‘Bezel-Free’ Flagship At IFA 2017

The IFA 2017 is approaching and, like every year, the technology fair of Berlin is expected to welcome the presentation of all kinds of products, including mobile phones. According to a new rumor that has appeared in the Chinese portal Weibo, Sony would be one of the brands to take advantage of the event to announce its new flagship with the screen without frames of 6-inches and an aspect ratio of 18:9. 

The no bevels screens have become one of the most prominent trends in the field of mobile telephony. This new design allows to increase the size of the screen while maintaining a more compact body so that it is possible for the devices and manufacturers to equip larger panels without increasing their weight. All brands want to dive into this trend and the screen without frames is being imposed on high-end smartphones. 


This rumor could have been initiated by the recent presentation of a screen without frames by the Japan Display Inc. (JDI), which is a conglomerate of divisions dedicated to the panels of Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi. JDI announced that it would begin mass production of LCD display with an extra-fine bezel on all four sides of the screen with an aspect ratio of 18:9.


If this rumor is true, it would be a big change in the design philosophy of Sony, which until now has been distinguished by reduced side frames but with the upper and lower bezels very marked. This is the case, for example, the Sony Xperia XZ, which indicate the frames of the top and bottom were excessively generous.

On the other hand, it should be remembered that in the past Mobile World Congress of Barcelona Don Mesa, marketing director of Sony, said that the company was happy with the 16:9 format. Also, keep in mind that Sony Pictures, the entertainment division of the company, is based on this format, so they would like to keep it also on smartphones.

At the moment everything is conjecture and nothing officially confirmed, so we will have to wait until September to know the exact plans of Sony.

Note: Only the Moto E4 is compatible with all four major U.S. carriers, namely AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon. The rest will work only on AT&T and T-Mobile.

For those who are thinking to buy the phones and just get rid of the company-specific modifications later, it's not that easy to pull it off. But it's not impossible, either.

Sure, knowingly giving Amazon the go-ahead to fill your phone with unwanted offers seems off-putting. Still, it's a good way to save a couple of bucks, but if the ads are too much to handle, then it's better to go with the standard models. The price difference isn't that big, after all.

You Can Unlock Your Windows 10 PC With A Samsung Phone

Samsung revealed it was planning to make this change back in February and estimated the feature would roll out in April. In the end it took quite a bit longer to arrive, but it's here now, and setting it up takes seconds.

The process uses Bluetooth and Windows Hello, and you'll need a Samsung phone running Marshmallow or higher, or Samsung tablet running Nougat or higher.

Download the latest version of the Flow app on your PC/tablet and phone from here. In the app on your PC, select your phone and click the Pair link. Confirm the passcode on both devices and the Bluetooth pairing will complete. Click 'Register device' and enter your Windows PIN. Confirm the passcode on both devices again, and enter your PIN once more. That's it, you're all done.

Motorola Launches Another Android’s Sweetest Budget Phone And It's The Moto E4

Motorola is back with yet another budget phone, the Moto E4 unveiled earlier this month. This is the latest budget-friendly phone in Motorola’s Android lineup, and it is available as of today from a couple budget carriers: Ting and Republic Wireless. As we reported the other day, Amazon is also offering the phone unlocked through its special discounted phone lineup, shaving a decent chunk of money off the already cheap phone’s price tag. What’s there to like about this handset? A whole lot. 

As far as budget smartphones are concerned, Motorola has long dominated the game: starting with its original Moto G released years ago, the company has continued to launch progressively more capable smartphones that, despite their low price tags, offer a relatively premium experience. The latest Moto E4 model is no exception, covering everything the average consumer could want for $99 or $129, depending on the company you buy it through. 


Both an unlocked version and a carrier version are now available, the unlocked version obviously coming with the most freedom, but also requiring you to buy it outright. Assuming you are able to finance it, the price bumps down to $11.43/month.

The Moto E4 packs a 5-inch HD display and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor alongside 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, plus there’s a microSD card expansion slot supporting up to 128GB. Unlike many phones in this price tier, the Moto E4 features a fingerprint sensor and a water-repellent nanocoating to help prevent water damage. The phone also sports dual microphones, and a ‘two-in-one’ speaker.

Other notable features include an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera, GPS, a full array of sensors (accelerometer, gyro, etc), support for 4G LTE and a variety of bands (depending on model), and a removable 2800mAh battery. The Moto E4 runs Android 7.1 Nougat.

Assuming you buy the phone through Motorola’s website, you can get it either unlocked or made for Verizon — note, though, that the Verizon version is only available in black, not fine gold. Unless you have some compelling reason to do otherwise, you should buy the unlocked version — it can be used on Verizon as well as other carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T, plus you can get it in gold and it doesn’t cost any more than the Verizon version (which can be used only on Verizon). As well, the piece-meal carriers Ting and Republic Wireless are both offering this budget phone through their own online stores. Republic Wireless is currently offering it for $99.
